I am deciding whether to buy the Hercules MK2. I DJ as a hobby at my friends' parties and events but I am wanting to get more into it and try and go somewhere with it. For right now I am just starting out. I have been using just my laptop with VDJ hooked up to external speakers.
This is where my question comes into play.
With Hercules MK2 controller:
Can I hook my laptop to the controller and have the music come out on external speakers, be able to use my headphones to pre-listen to tracks to set up transitions, and plug in a mic to speak over the music.
I just want to know what I can do with it so I don't waste my money.

Yes, with the MK2 you could do all of those things. You might also like to have a look at the MK4, which is an updated version of the MK2.

I'd also recommend you take a look at the Hercules RMX, (if you haven't already) as this is a very solid controller.
