just ignore it. I have looked in to this and it's a moneymaking scam between mcps and prs who can't even agree between themselves. Venues were being sent letters about only hiring dj's with a licence but it was totally unrealistic and unworkable and it's died a death. we had the prs woman in a few months ago and she wasn't interested in where the music came from. The licence terms and restrictions were plainly stupid and unenforceable. Also mcps and prs requirements are not bound by law so there's nothing to worry about at all.

I am trying to gather as much info as I can because they are trying to copy this and to enforce it in Croatia.
Which is absurd and Croatia is only country that I know they are bothering DJ's and confiscating their equipment.
So all trustworthy info is helpful here, as DJ's in Croatia are gathering and organizing in order to do the right thing.
And as always they are saying that they merely copy laws of EU, since Croatia enters EU soon.
And BTW they are charging aproax 600.-EU per a yearly license.
Thank you

ProDub is quite frankly a joke.
It's not a license to use MP3s and so on - it's a format shifting license. So if you rip a vinyl or CD to MP3 (or burn an MP3 to CD for example) then you need a produb license for that conversion. Once that conversion is licensed you won't need to renew that license; only for extra tracks you convert.
Very few DJ's have adopted this though; most are ignoring it. It's my understanding that there is very little information going out to venues and so on and there are no enforcement agents. It's also extremely difficult for them to prove you format shifted rather than obtaining in that format - and thats just the beginning of the issues.

And anyone who actually paid for a licence just lost their money. The copyright laws in the UK are draconian and don't take the digital age in to account. Although I agree artists should be paid royalties these not for profit organisations are starting to take the piss.

I found the whole things so outrageous I moved to the USA*
They should be going after the rich club owners its an attempt to recover lost income from pirate downloads.
I agree artists should be supported but it seems restrictive.
*Ok so thats not entirely true :-)

On a technical note, I'm 100% video and buy my videos from Promo Only in mp4 computer format, then transfer them to computer. Therefore, not changing format and can't play them in a DVD player, so they can bugger off with their Pro Dub license. :-)

That's why all the DJ's in the US carry guns, we don't play that shit over here. Our second amendment states that a DJ has the right to pop a cap in your ass, if you interfere with the party.
Simon, where are you now?

Denmark has a similar rule about having to pay a license if you want to convert music you buy to other medias, and then play it professionally
I don't think it gets inforced much though, as long as you can prove that you pay for the music you use, and the places you play pays for public usags
Best regards
Klaus

I have a produb licence, necessary because one of the venues I work for was told to ensure all laptop DJs in thr group had the licence, and that random inspections would ensure compliance, with heavy fines to both unlicenced djs and venues allowing them to work.
I've had the licence 10 months, and as yet nobody has asked to see it.

Pete,
This whole thing is a farce, completely unworkable and impossible to police.
Basically MCPS/PRS tried to force club / bar owners to get their DJ's to buy this licence to convert music they already had. Also it said you couldn't mix songs together for more than so many seconds. It was put together by people who have no working knowledge of the UK DJ industry. The venue also has a PRS licence so it's a double dip.
There are DJ's with illegal hard drives full of music but that should be handled seperately and not penalise legal professional DJ's.
I have been a DJ in Aberdeen for 26 years and never seen anything so stupid. If they had forced this I would have just given up as the costs involved from both bodies initially and on a yearly basis would have been restrictive. These bodies have no legal standing and pursuing a normal DJ in a civil court wouldn't be worth their time.
Total scam, sorry to hear you paid and got done!
