hey guys, i bought vdj after trying it out and liking it and now that im getting better and talking to more djs im finding that i get one response from most people "virtual dj is a toy" or something very similar.

i would like to hear from virtual djs user base (new or old) why everyone thinks this program is "shit" or a toy.

furthermore whats so amazing about the other programs? traktor serato ect. (once again id rather hear it from you guys then the sales department of said companies)

thanks, nizmonk

If you are happy then that's all that matters. VDJ is professional grade software with many many users working in large venues. Don't listen to them. ......

Most DJ's in my city use Serato or Traktor but the club I work in rocks!

i agree, it just gets annoying after the 20th time

I agree, don't listen to them! This software ROCKS!! It's all about the DJ and what he does with the tools he has, and this is one powerful multifunction tool.

Like everything in life, you will get as many opinions as the people you speak to...and the usual "snobbery" aspect always creeps in...

I have used the "others" and each has it's plus and minus points...but for me, VDJ Pro is just so adaptable and solid.

I guess there's a few reason people say it's a toy: the older versions didn't look very professional (even though they worked great!) and there's lot's of cracked versions knocking around the internet so at any given gig there's probably a few people that have tried it!

I remember getting that response when I first started computer DJ-ing, but here's what I did:

Put my laptop into a flightcase with a mixer and a professional controller (dmc2). I found that when I had my laptop sitting on a table with my little hercules mp3 controller sitting next to it, nobody took it seriously. But sat in a flightcase (raised off the table away from potentially spilt drinks) the whole setup looks much more pro.

I downloaded some skins and chose one that I liked. Then my screen didn't look the same as all those kids using cracked versions. Also, there's lots of skins that have the serato style jog wheels and that helps them to look more serious and less like a toy.

I use music videos. When someone comes over who thinks they're in the know and says vdj is a toy I always tell them that I used to DJ with CDs (which I did) but I wanted to do visuals and music videos and virtual DJ is the software out there that can do that. There's not really much you can say to that. Even when I don't have my projector plugged in I show them mixing a few videos on the laptop screen and they're usually pretty impressed. (If they're really in the know, then they'd know that serato has a video plugin, but your average "that's a toy" guy doesn't actually know anything- if he did, he'd know vdj was a good bit of kit).

Virtual DJ is a great tool for DJ-ing that has so many features that nothing else has (For example, last weekend I used mobile internet to downlaod songs using netsearch right from inside vdj whilst I was playing- nothing else lets you do that!, and the music videos, and the visuals, and the effects, and the sampler, and the support for all the file types, and support for all the soundcards and controllers, and the skins, and the free regular updates, now 6 decks at a time!).

If you come across somebody who comments of vdj, just flash them a knowing smile (because you know it rocks and you pity them for being so naive) and explain some of the stuff about why it's good, then go and play a blinding set- just to prove your point!

I used to get a lot of stick for not going with the craze, I remember buying an FBT active set of speakers when everyone else was using RCF, even though the FBT's cost more money they still used to say RCF are better and thats what i should have. Also, VDJ, STR8150's, Tascam, Dell, Studiomaster, RMX etc all of which I've been happy with.

It pissez people off I think when they see me rock the place from unconventional equipment, One kid near me just sold his CDJ2000 and 800 after seeing me rock the place from the equipment I was using that night. It's all about experience and the understanding of equipment, and now software - combined.

It's also a young thing, once you've got going properly!!! and start being successful and being well respected making good money at it these people that once gave you shi* now don't say anything no matter what you do because you've cracked it and are now the master.

Equipment for me does play a huge part, I always change my gear to further improve.

It's a bit like Starwars, to be a jedi night you have to learn the art as Skywalker did.

I cut my teeth as a DJ on VDJ. I have heard from the beginning that I wasn't a real DJ and that I was using a toy. Well, at the end of a gig, I never got that "toy" comment. Most folks I know around here swear up and down by Serato. I have it as well, and it has its pros and cons. I can see using them both for different applications. I have done gigs alongside Serato DJs and have killed them. It's about the DJ knowing WHATEVER he uses inside and out, and getting the most out of what he has.

VDJ is a great software and is not a toy. Dont listen to those guys, I use for my parties and havent had a complaint yet. Do what makes you happy.

Don't let people bully you around. They have their choice in software like you do and you chose VDJ. Are these guys going to block you from getting gigs..doubtful. Do your job well and you will be recognized for it regardless of what software you use.

Mr. Nizmonk,
I've been a full time working DJ for the past 14 years. I have (fortunately) reached a stage in my life where I can buy the equipment I think will do the best job.
My Speakers: JBL
My Amps: QSC
My Mixer: Denon
My Soundcard: Audio 8
My Software: Virtual DJ
There are NO TOYS in my list. :-)

95% of people who talk shit about VDJ have never even touched it - and of those who actually have used VDJ and still talk shit about it, around 80% simply didn't have a clue what they were doing.

i kinda nicely shove it in there face .....

if you can call that nicely .....

Chuck puts on a pained look and patiently explains to his new friend , DJ Hopeless

"let's take a look at the video monitor

i'm running video right now with FireText text to screen and 4 other plugins......

but you don't do video even though your software is better ?? how does that work ??

what's a plug in ?

see this .... 4 decks controlled by the RMX and the new advanced config makes the audio setup easy....

so again , your stuff is better even though it can't do any of this ?? "

Chuck scratches his head puzzled , and picks up his Molson .........

@ Nizmonk .....4 decks , advanced config, RMX and some midi mapping equals amazing capabilities

and a lot of fun

It would be nice if the forum could get past this, however with new user all the time I guess it's just going to be a rotational thing.

That's why experienced forum is so good.

people hear this crap and they wanna be reassured that they haven't made

a mistake.....

those of us who have used it for awhile know it's not a mistake, but our experience tells us this....

new people don't have that

I especially hate the DJ's who think I can't manually beat match a song simply because I'm using Virtual DJ. Who cares? Newer songs use perfect timing. I can afford to be lazy matching up the BPM so that I have more time being creative with the way I bring one song into another. I only beat match older songs by ear because they use human drummers.

That said... I own Traktor Scratch Pro, and I've used PCDJ and Serato Scratch/Itch. Not to knock on any of these products, because they all have their strengths and weaknesses, but I don't rely on any of them for gigs as much as I do Virtual DJ.

Serato was designed here in New Zealand so I've heard it all. This has probably been used before but you can draw parallels to the VHS and BETA argument. Betamax was a far superior product - broadcast quality, smaller tapes, etc, yet VHS took a strangle hold on the market here, simply because people bought what everyone else was using, until eventually you couldnt get beta tapes here at all anymore. Just because everyone else is doing it, doesnt make it right.

Like many here, I have Serato as well, and never use it.

The other night I had a guy ask me if I was going to 'upgrade' to Traktor soon. "Oh, have they got video working now?". Blank look ;)

Where im from we could give a crap less what you use unless your just a press play dj, that's what jukeboxes are for. I would say just pratice and then rip theirs asses up on the decks or controller or what ever you use!! And don't lower yourself to there level by arguing back, you'll never win because their obviously dumb to begin with or we wouldn't be having this thread.

Just my thoughts
Huey

Also, there are still DJs today who swear by vinyl who will still trek in their crates of records with their pair of Technics 1200s. So when you tell those computer illiterates about the crates in Serato or Virtual Folders in VDJ, they will say that playing with vinyl records is still more fun than anything else. When I started with a company in the 90s, they gave me 2 large cases of cassette tapes and 2 tape decks, and that's how I started doing weddings - with friggin cassette tapes. Got weekly updates. Try beat mixing from tape deck to tape deck. Kinda hard to do. Or if they request a song that happens to be at the end of a tape, but it has been rewound to the beginning, you politely tell them you need to FF the tape so will get to it as soon as possible. But the problem was that you needed a third tape deck to do the forwarding and rewinding. Good memories.

VDJ has given me the opportunity to give my customers any entirely new way entertaining. Not only am i able to give my customers great sounding music, I have the power to give them Karaoke on demand, I'm able to give them other visual effects, on demand!. I'm able to do Video mixing, on demand. I'm able to set VDJ to automix and go dance or mingle. I'm able to record my mixes, on demand. And so much more. If you want to create an experience that your customers would always remember, then you know what you have to do.
