Hey guys- I'm relatively new to DJing, but I've had a little bit of experience DJing house parties and some small club settings. This far, I've been using only my laptop and a DJ/I0 that I bought so I could pre-listen to my mixes. I think it's time for me to move to the next level and buy a MIDI controller. I'm not looking to spend a whole lot of cash on one- Preferably less than $300, as I am still an amateur and I want to get used to using a MIDI controller before I shell out big bucks. But I still want something pretty solid. I've been looking around and it looks like the Hercules Steel and the Numark Stealth are the best choices for what I'm looking for. I already have an external sound card, otherwise I would be looking at the RMX or the omni control.
I'm sure a lot of you guys have had experience with these two controllers. I've read/watched the reviews and just can't make a decision, so I bring it to you guys.
What should I buy?
Hercules Steel (RMX) or Numark Stealth (omni) control?
Also, any other recommendations of other controllers that are in similar price range would be appreciated.

I was in your very situation a year ago. There are a few things to consider. The hercules steel and omni don't have sound cards, so while they are cheaper if you want to use speakers other than your computers (unless your computer has a good soundcard) then you will need to buy a soundcard. Your looking at $100 and up for a decent one. The hercules RMX has a soundcard, and it has extra inputs (phono and cd) which allow you to connect turntables or cd players and works pretty darn good with timecode vinyl. So long story short it allows for easy expansion of your rig if you plan on buying other equipment down the line. Now if you saved just a little more you can buy the American Audio VMS4 which has all the features of the RMX, plus its 4 channels, and it can be used as a stand alone mixer (no laptop or software needed). And if you really think this is something you are going to be serious about you could save a little more and get the Native Instruments S4 which appears to be (in my opinion) the most advanced controller on the market right now....
However,For a first midi controller though you can't go wrong with the hercules rmx and VDJ7 Pro =D

Dude like I said in my original post- I already have an external soundcard. That's why I'm looking at the Steel instead of the RMX. Other than the soundcard and the extra channels, they seem to be exactly the same. Am I correct in this assumption?

check it
a great simple controller is the DMC2, unfortunately its rackmount. idk you care or not, i think its goes for about 200
maybe try the mixtrack also...
if not that go ahead with an Ion controller, i think the discover DJ pro is less that 300 and all it is is the ion version of the Numark iDJ3.
just take my suggestions, and if i helped, well, then im glad i could
Good luck in the future.

+1 on the Numark MixTrack, I have the MixTrack Pro and it is very nice. Since you already have the sound interface you can buy the MixTrack and go to town.
For $150 you can't go wrong.

Agreed. That Numark ($150) is the best controller for that dollar amount. The platters feel really, really good. The only thing is that for long term purposes, this controller would take quite the beating if used in a crowded club environment, and so I would only expect to secure this from such abuse for up to a few years at most, correct me if I am wrong.

I just bought the Numark Mixtrack myself....I love the feel of it, BUT, it comes with Traktor ! It will work with Virtual Dj upon plugging it in, BUT, the mapping thats built into the software sucks! The Mixtrack has EQ Kill buttons accross the top of the mixer and they are not mapped to work with VDJ !! I wish someone would make a skin for the Mixtrack and mapp the buttons to match....THAT WOULD BE AWSOME!...Unfortunetly I do not understand how to do all that, so I will just have to wait and hope tha someone does!

Donz Digital,
Did you get that situation worked out with your Mixtrack? Do you have a good up-to-date mapping setting?
I am considering buying the Mixtrack next month as a backup controller. I've been at my local audio and instrument store, very close to where I live, and I will tell you that I am so impressed with what Numark has done--the Mixtrack, to say the least, appears to blow away so many other controllers at that price range. It's very well built for one hundred and fifty USD. I really like the layout.

Donz, catch me on the Radio chat sometime, maybe I can help you map those EQ kills. (DJ Sweet T)
Durability of the MixTrack is a concern, I plan to purchase an ATA case for my MixTrack Pro.
MixTrack Pro dimensions are 18.75 inches by 11 inches.
