Tema: Help with 4 Decks / External Mixer setup

I'm going to upgrade tonight and have been reading up as much as I can all week.

My question is can I control four decks Volume / EQ / Head Phones on my external mixer with the gear I have? .. and if so how?

I want to control the two extra decks from my mixer .. not with the mouse or keyboard shortcuts.

I "think" I will have to purchase another Maya 44 sound card for the extra 2 channels .. but I am not sure.

My gear is: (and this really is my favorite setup ever)

VDJ soon to be 7.1
Maya 44 sound card
2 CDJ 800's with time code
Numark DMC2 controller
Denon DN-X500 mixer
All secured in an Odyssey coffin case.

You are going to need 4 stereo outputs to run 4 decks on an external mixer. Maya has only 2. Buying another Maya i am not sure if the software will read Maya 1 and Maya 2 as 2 different sound cards. Buying a different 4X4 USB sound card or Audio 8 will do your job for sure.

You can do it with 1 Maya44 but it wont be in true Stereo. Meaning if theres a part in a song that plays ONLY on the left side it would come out of both the LEFT and RIGHT side.............. This is how you do it, you go into advanced config and make yours look like this, minus the mic and linein, lol!

.. so from the looks of this configuration I will need to put my one out left to channel 1 .. one output right to channel 3 .. two output left to channel 2 .. two output right to channle 4? .... or do I need to daisy chain my rca cables ?

If you really feel up to it .. a video would be great !! .. but I think I can manage with a few hasty pointers.

I got it working !! ... the config worked .. thanks a ton!!


For anyone interested you have to split the outputs into channels.
output 1 left to channel A
output 1 right to channel B
output 2 left to channel C
output 2 right to channel D

you also have to set your mixer to mono


oh .. and one more note .. with this config you MUST have your time code running at all times .. if you click it off for a wedding or some other gig it is not needed .. your sound breaks up and sounds like you have a bad RCA cable .. I guess if you really want to turn time code off you need to delete them in the sound set up.


and one final note .. it is VERY VERY hard playing 4 songs at once !!! .. I haven't been this excited about mixing in a long time .. once I get good at mixing 4 songs ill have to figure out how to mix 6 ;)

Bro I think you got something wrong.........im uploading a video so you can see what mean. Is your mixer a 4 channel mixer? Yeah the more I read what you wrote I'm pretty sure you dont have it hooked right. You should be able to control all 4 decks with 2 timecodes. You dont have to keep the timecode running and your sound issue dosent seem right at all.

Ahhh .. ya that makes sense .. I'll have to pick up 4 of them Y adapters tomorrow after work.

I took the two RCA cables out of the maya and split them into 4 channels on the mixer .. one cable per channel .. it actually worked .. I just got done listening to my recording ..

Thanks for all the help .. I was a little worried about upgrading .. my next live gig is Sat night .. I'm going to try my best not to assault anyone with my lack of 4 deck skills sat night .. but it will be hard.

Update ..

I bought some Y splitters today and hooked it up just like in the video.

I still have the same crackling sounds when I turn off time code .. its not really a big deal .. just kind of annoying.

Do me a favor bro and post a pic of your timecode settings. Maybe something in there is not set right.

Ouch .. so my gig last night didn't go so well ..

I tested my gear out at home .. but its different at full club volume .. I had to shut down and configure for two decks instead of four.

At high volume even with time code running I was getting crackles and pops .. people were asking me if I blew my speakers.

No worries though .. it still works great running two decks... I just wanted the extra decks for fun.

Anyway .. here are some pics of my gear and config

Try setting the latency in VDJ to auto, then using the Maya control panel to choose an appropriate latency.

It's possible you're getting DPC spikes, so it might be worth checking that too.

hey beatbreaker1 i have a american audio vms4 mixer and it is a four channel. i am wanting to run four deck would i be able to do that since it has the sound card already built in?

Hey Beatbreaker!

Great video! I am planning on using an M-Audio fast track pro for 2 channels through vdj and then the 2 cdj 400's as usual. I also have a djm 700 (4 channel midi mixer). Am I able to plug the cdj's in to the first 2 channels, the M-Audio in channels 3 and 4 but then still use the cdj's to control all 4 decks?

Also, what skin are you using? It looks sick!

@Hotwaxdjs, it sounds about right. I've never used those so I'm not a 100%, lol! But with vdj script there isn't much we can't do :-)

Hey, thanks for the quick response!

I plugged in the m-audio fast track and the 2 cdj's worked perfect, they could also switch between decks to control the others. I set the deck 3 and 4 to m-audio channels 1/2 and 3/4. The volume came out of channels 3 and 4 but it was super distorted. Anything I can do to fix that part? Other than that it seems to work perfectly as I would want it!

Great job guys! I actually dont use TimeCodes but I still need help using the 4decks. I use cdj 400 and I connect it to my PC directly with cables...It works fine but now I want to use the 4 decks at the same time...It doesnt work everytime i set it on External mixer.. PLS HELP GUYS! THANKS

you should just need to use advanced config as above, you need to select "mono channels" up the top, then set all the outputs of the cdj 400's. when you split the channels it sends one channel for one output, so effectively you get 4 channels from 2 stereo outputs

CDJ
L-R------L-R
1-2-----3-4
VDJ

Then you get four "single (female) to double (male) rca adapters" and you can have dual mono channels running through a four channel analog mixer so sound comes from both speakers, you just wont get the stereo effect that most tracks have

i am having problems with swicthing between 4 deck, with two time code. i was using one timecode coz one player was in shop and i had it setup in single mode and was switching between all four decks with no problem using the tab button. Now that i got my other player back and set it up with four decks, i can get the sound out of all the channels i have set but swicthing between the decks is a problem.

I would like the left timecode/player to control decks 1 & 3 and the right timecode/player to control 2 & 4 decks

i can get them to toggle through the decks but sometimes they won't stop the deck and i keep toggling threw then finnaly it will control it.

2 pioneer 1000
pioneer 800 mixer
Asus G51J
VDJ 7.04
