Hey folks! Hope all is well. So I decided to wipe my laptop and install W7. It took me a while to backup my tracks. After I did here we go.format lets go. Did I save my data base and stuff? Hell no. Moral of this is; PLEASE BACKUP VDJ. No history, cue points, skins, TX nothing. Later dudes had to tell someone.

not to sound twatish, but why on earth didnt you just do the anytime upgrde option????? that way you wouldnt have needed to back up anything. all your data, software, "databases" lol, would have been kept intact and the new os installed.

yep. that's how we learn from mistakes.
best advice i can give for anyone out there is to be redundant when it comes to backing up those files (and not just your database for vdj - you mobile guys should remember this as well if you don't already do it.)
save to external drives, online email services, flashdrives, burn to a data disk, anything that gives you that extra bit of insurance so you don't lose what's important!

In future set up a free dropbox account. You get 2Gb for nothing. Set it to sync your Documents>VirtualDJ folder and everytime you go online any changes will be saved to the cloud.
You don't even need to remember to do it!

There is no need to wipe the hard drive. Windows 7 can be custom installed and you keep all your files from old windows.

You can easily change the file paths by editing the XML file.

Ouch...
What I have always done since 2001 and my PCDJ days, was make C:\ for the windows and applications. Then make D:\MP3 for the tracks and inside the D:\MP3 was the PCDJ record case.
Since I went VDJ, still keep media tracks on D:\. So when ever I upgrade OS - and that includes bare metal install fresh (no upgrade), all my media file are still there and the big XML w/ all my cues.
Plus, I have an exact copy of that structure on backup USB drives so in worst case, buy a laptop and I am still in business. :)

you wouldnt have to worry about a bunch of hp factory crap because you no doubt had already stripped the os and software to its bare minimum orrigionally.
you wouldnt get all the crap back, just windows 7. everything else would have stayed the same.
if however you diddnt strip it to its bare minumum then i would have to say,
shame on you!

Hmmm......I am well aware of the download section. I'm looking for skins that were in the previous versions prior to the updates starting at 5.#.#. The skins from previous versions are included when you update your software;-)

Hey,
Don't panic yet. Your files may still be there. I do IT work at Dalhousie University here in Halifax. I had an external drive that I used to store image files for our fleet of laptops. It developed a number of errors and when i went to retrieve an image file a couple months ago, it showed up as a newly formatted drive. I had backups of my desktop computer, mutiple other desktops and laptops on it. They were all gone. I stopped using the drive immediatley and did a search on Google for Recovery Software.
One search took me to: http://data-recovery-software-review.toptenreviews.com/
I downloded trials for the top 3 applications. I decided on #3 "Recover My Files". I researched and read all the reviews about it. I paid for the download and I am pleased to say that I got back every important file. When you reformat, the data can remain because the index file gets rebuilt and looses track of any previous data.
Let me say that I have no connection to this company. I was just desperate and took a chance. Work paid for the copy anyway. It is a rather lame name but it worked as advertised.
If you have not used your new drive much by writing all kinds of new files to it, it is possible that your VDJ files may still be there. The demo of these programs normally lets you recover about 300 megs of data. They all will at least show you if it can be recovered or not.
Please give one a try and let us know if you have any luck.
