Hello Fellas!

just a quick question, any of you create your own songs and with wich software? I would like to start creation but don't know where to begin!

I use Ableton for creation...

Do you require a keyboard or you can mostly do everything on pc?

Do you mean a controller? No, you can control Ableton with keyboard and mouse. I don't use Ableton to DJ with, so I've never bothered buying a controller, although there are plenty available.

I use Reason 5. You can use it with a keyboard but its not necessary.

I use Reason 5 too... Also got fruity loops but it's got nothing on Reason.

Both have ReWire so you can link it through VDJ.

Depends what you want it for, I use Logic Pro which is powerful enough for what I need. What sort of music will you be making?

I warmly recommend FL Studio (formerly known as FruityLoops).

going to do house, or dance, maybe hip hop, mostly for fun but i gotta gig to create a hip hop parody....

i use ableton and am starting to learn cubase. might have to give fruity loops and reason 5 a go.

i use fl studio but sony acid music studio is a daw that can host plugins (effects, generators) and is less then $100 bucks so not to bad to start with in loop based music,fl studio has free lifetime updates, which things like protools and abletion dont include, which is a good deal and its a nice daw, there is a free trial, search around and test different programs before you decided to purchase

Thank you guys! Ableton will be my choice. I have seen reasonable work for new people working, I used to teach music in a music school, so getting a keyboard and play songs will definitely be an option! :)

Cheers!

This is a question you will receive many different answers for. Most DAWS are a means to the same end, the main difference being work flow. If you want to pump out tracks right away FL Studio is a great entry level program and many professionals use it. Personally I started with Reason. I like this software but its downside is that it doesn't use VST plug ins. For a beginner this can be good or bad. Good because it forces you to learn the concepts behind audio creation and manipulation. VST's can make you lazy, and if you don't understand what they are doing then you haven't really learned anything your just tweaking nobs. With reason you can make custom patches which in turn are quite powerful and function like VST's. So here we go I use Ableton Live now and its amaaaaaazing! It fits my work flow personally, and has ecxellent live performance capabilities and comes with some really advanced instruments/plugins. I own Reason, FL, and Ableton. I like them all but for me ableton takes the cake hands down. Also I can use ALL of FL's plugins with Ableton. Win Win!

Check out this website for some VERY professional VST's

oh by the way i just started using ableton a month ago. I've had very little time to work with it, but here is an example of a tune I cranked out the other night. Its a jam session that showcases some vocal audio manipulation. Theere is really no structure to it, like i said its not a song or even close to a finished product. The kick is an 808 original, but the snares and synth is a sample i threw in just to see what it would sound like.

its the song entitled RhyThm.

Reason 5 , FL , Sonar 7 & the kitchen sinc (or sync in this case).....
