I am going to sound with an over-simplification here, and I have said this before and will say it again, and I will assert to any 'vinyl snob' out there (you know you've met them, the type of clerks at record stores that snare and hiss when you say the word "MP3" or even "CD")...that the bottom line is that vinyl is just flat out not cost effective. Those days are over for me. If I was forced to use vinyl in a different world, I would not deejay.
(During the 80's I was a deejay using vinyl like everyone else during that era. I had an enormous collection in my living room that made it almost impossible to even walk around without tripping over a record. It was fine back then.)
Not...cost...effective.
Goodbye vinyl!

Vinyl is over because of Mp3's. Back in the days, you had to go thru your crates and bring what you thought you were going to use for that gig. I used to bring an average of 4 crates. Now with dj software and all my mp3's, I can have all my songs at once without carrying 2 store shelfs full of records. Dj software was really created to use existing equipment ( Back then, the majority was using turntables and some using Cd players ). There was no such thing as a midi deck until the birth of the Dac 1 or 2. Now you have soo many choices.
At first, i wasn't really exited about using a push button midi deck because i loved mixing on my other setup up. Now with my denon 3700 decks, i feel right at home like when i use my technics. Very soon, i will get my NS6 deck.

The trick, for a lack of better term, is to make sure and use TRUE high bitrate MP3s (if MP3s are what one is using). I use nothing less than 256 kbps MP3s, the bulk being 320 kbps. (I do have a very small percentage of 192k and even some 160k files, however they are exceptional in that the source of the recording was very good.) You get some chumps out there that will take a 128k mp3 or similar and they will go ahead and save (via mp3 editing software) it as a 320K file. Those type of MP3s don't count as high bitrate, of course, as the native file was low in count to begin with.
(WAV files are great, but they "weigh" in at about 6 times the disc space as an MP3 320k counterpart. That's fine and all, but WAV files don't sound 6 times better. They sound killer, but not enough to ditch MP3s all together, imo.... For instance, I have heard very good sounding high bitrate MP3s from Traxsource.com that are a little bit difficult to tell the difference in sound quality as compared to a WAV file counterpart.)
With this kind of technology to bear at current, and only better technology to come out in the future as well, vinyl is a thing of the past, especially if you want a lot more Remixing leverage in your sets and recordings.

This is wonderful news! I've got 2 vinyl outfits from the 90's and I've been waiting for them to come back in style!
Thanks for the info, now I'm off to do some closet shopping. :^)

Are you crazy!? What's wrong with Vinyl? Can you even call yourself a DeeJay?!

I still got my 1210's and over a thousand records. I really want to make a freestyle classics mix. Just straight up vinyl, no laptop. Although Vinyl is hardly being sold, You still have millions of used turntables. Technics made such a good product that many buy them used instead of new.

True True... Technics 1200 's for the win!

Why are any of us here if there are even thoughts of returning to vinyl? The software (not vinyl) has brought us all together in this community.
I no longer use vinyl and probably never will again, and yes, I call myself a DJ but so do the many people who pay me and enjoy my shows.
My 2 cents

Some might not want to admit but there's definitely signs of a comeback with more and more online stores offering the format and from an Irish perspective in Dublin the vinyl section of Tower Records has doubled in size in the last year. It's hard to explain but perhaps people miss the tangible aspect to music associated with the big black wax disc and proper artwork not to mention the warmth of sound. Personally I just added a set of Stanton STR8-150s to my setup last year and I really believe that it has added to the DJ experience in an immeasurable way. I might be spending a lot more than I used to but I have so much more value on what I buy...
...I obviously still use digital too but I know what I prefer now I've had a chance to "feel" the music again...

Have fun. You will eventually get tired of lugging it around. And I hope the retail prices are attractive to you because they certainly aren't over here in the states. Vinyl costs a tremendous amount more in dollars and resources, all for a "warm" sound. That's fine for some, but I'll pass and move on into the 21st thank you.

What do our mean tremendous?? I get full length eps for 10/15 bucks. That's pretty much the same as buying a cd........I know what saying about lugging that shit around but where I live I agree, there has been an increase on the vinyl shelves.

How do you feel about the big comeback of vinyl????
I think it was a good thing (for our industry), but as time goes on, the need for even more control and performance will once again put it back into the 'collectors only' category.

There's some excellent deals on http://www.discogs.com and http://www.juno.co.uk. As for the lugging I don't think an average length pre-planned set involves a lot of heavy lifting but I can see where you're coming from. There are a lot of annoying out dated aspects to the vinyl experience but mp3s never drew me to the dj system at home in quite the same way - in other words I was starting to only associate the gear with the money it could provide me as opposed to the reasons I started doing this thing we do in the first place....love of music.
