Projector would give you the ability to upgrade and downgrade the size of your screen depending on the size of the room and your audience. Plus, it's more compact. Flat panels are nice, but you can't fold them up or stretch them out if you require it.

Just my thoughts,
AC

I would go projector as it's easier to transport and for 300-500 people you are going to need a large flat panel.

Yeah it's looking like that's the way I'm gonna go, Thanks fellas! Any ideas for good cheap projectors? Just need something to get by these next couple gigs and I should be able to by something better.

Thanks for the time and info

I'm going to say hit craigslist and see what's available. Up in the great white north we have staples business depot (unsure if they're in the US) who have multi-media projectors from $200 -$1000 CAD. Take about 5% of those numbers for USD. The last projector I used was made by Casio and I was quite impressed with how clear the image was. I thought they only made keyboards!

Let us know what you get. Peace.

Ok I picked up a Sharp DLP, it is 2000 lemens (I think thats hows to spell it, lol). Now I would like to know if there is a special fabric that has to be used for rear projection? ?

Thanks for the time and info fellas
Huey

I've done away with my spandex screen

It had poor picture during rear projection and a dreadfull hotspot.

Now I strictly use front projection. It's much brighter, better image quality and the projector is right beside me so I can keep a better eye on it.
This is how it looks now.

Second shot before the lights went out.

@Marcel, how do you have that screen mounted and what kind of material is it?

Thanks for the time and info fellas
Huey

also when you say spandex you mean like the stuff women wear??

The screen comes with wall mounting hardware and holes on the spine. So I took regular lighting clamps, drilled a hole in the back side of them; then attached the clamps to the screen mounting attachments. Then I simply life the screen on the truss and point the projector at it.

Looks sharp, Even If is do say so myself :P

In answer to your question.... yes Lyrca Spandex, plain white will make a very nice projection screen, for front or rear projection.
You can buy it by the roll in any fabric store.

I agree it does look fresh!

Thanks for the info and time, now to make this a reality!

I use a 42" LCD for small venues and a 3200 lumen projector with a Da-Lite rear projection fast fold 6X8 screen. Both are excellent quality and no hotspots.

Well I just setup the projector and point it at a wall in my lab and at 80inches it looks good!! I went to my local fabric shop and they told me I would have to go to 1 of 2 different cities to find the spandex. So ill be takin a road trip soon.

Thanks for the info fellas
Huey

Ok so I went to another fabric store and the lady sold me some cloth that would work for front or rear projection! So here it is at about 6 foot by 7 foot across,

Looks pretty darn good. Now just gotta get a truss and frame it up!

Huey

Nice job Huey! What was the cost for the projector and the cloth?

Regards,
AC

You'll never believe it but hear it goes, my boss came in while I was on break and said "I heard you were lookin for a projector?" I said yeah what's up. He said "here's my car keys go out in the trunk and grab it outta there and see if it'll work for ya." So of course I thought he was talkin about 1 of those old school things from high school. Well it was the Sharp and I was stoked!! So I put it back in my truck and he said "the bulb has only like 3% left so if I bought a new bulb for around 200 bucks it was mine!!" I told I couldn't take it, he said "bullshit" so I had him order me a bulb. As for the for the fabric it cost me 12 bucks for an 8 x 9 piece! I'd say today was a GREAT DAY!!!

Huey

That's a fantastic story! You gotta love when a plan comes together!!!!

$200 bucks for a bulb is a bit steep! YIKES!!! I Guess that's what the go for. Kinda like printer ink... sometimes it's cheaper to buy a new printer!

Well it was still a nice find. Best of luck with the project.

AC

Nice to hear Huey!!

Thanks Marcel! Do you have any close-up pictures of your screen setup? Any of you for that matter, I'm trying to get ideas on how I should approach this.

Thanks for the time and info

I'm doing a wedding show this weekend, I dunno if I'm bringing the big screen or a more booth friendly TV.

I'll post close ups for you as soon as I can
