Hi all
Just wondering if I might be the only one here. I decided to treat myself to a nice shiny new laptop to use as my backub machine and for running VDJ at smaller gigs.
HP G62 with i3 350m 3 gig ddr3 Radeaon HD5470 graphics card and all the good stuff.
Guess what it failed within 2 days of purchace so no probs took it back to the shop where the nice man replaced it. Guess what it failed within 24 hours. With the same fault. The backlight on the display failed.
HP support were less than usless when I explained that both units failed in exactly the same way following a HP recomended bios update.
Has anyone got a copy of the ID 1439 VER F.09 bios for this unit. I Got a Feeling that if I roll the bios back I will also get the display back.
BTW if anyone has one of these machines watch out for the display failing if you update the bios. Actualy if I could I would just return it get my money back and not by an HP product again.

A year and a half ago I could have saved a few hundred by buying the HP unit of equal specs to my Sony and chose not to when the sales guy told me that HP was starting to use generic parts in their systems to make them more affordable. I ended up buying the Sony and I've yet to have any problems with audio or video.
Recently a friend of mine who uses Traktor (not that we should judge him) and an HP had a fatal crash at a gig a few weeks back. Blue screen of death and the unit is only 4 months old. Still waiting to hear what the root cause was.
HP can sell me a printer and not much more.

I've heard but negative things about HP Laptops, which is why I went with Dell for my gig machine and going on 3-4 years its still working like a charm!
I bought an HP Netbook and love it. I've had no issues with it but I am still very concerned about gigging with an HP Laptop.

I have just never bought HP laptops. I like their printers, but I won't mess with any of their other products.

On the flip side I bought an hp 530 almost 4 years ago and its been absolutely bulletproof! It started off life with 1gb ram a 60gb hard drive and vista basic, its now on its 3rd hard drive 4th os and second lot of ram, now has 3gb, none of these changes were due to faults just me wanting to change things, I mean I have dropped it countless times, thrown it in a temper and even spilt drinks on it, its just made of nice thick plastic and I honestly have NEVER had a thing go wrong! I even have an identical unit as a backup. I love it. They're not all bad although I have heard some bad things, maybe I've just been lucky.

Hmm
It does seem to be very luck of the draw. My previous laptop is an HP badged Compaq Pressario. Its now 4 years old, hence the desision to upgrade to a new machine. It still works dispite the bes efforts of my 10 year old son LOL.
The realy annoying thing is that performance wise It runs like a champ. I loaded up my VDJ pro and it ran great (still does if I plug in an external monitor) no glitches or faffing with the settings. Loads files mega fast and even runs video without a hitch.
Oh well back to the shop to try and get it repaired.
Thanks all for the replies

My 5 year old HP dv2000 is a bit under powered, but still going strong. My new HP G72 has been solid for the past 6 months that I've had it, (knock on wood!) and I've been spinning video 4-6 hours a night at least twice a week.
(Just had to give HP some love!)
edit; Don't buy from big chain stores! You get the cheapo ones from Walmart or Best Buy and they will break.

My parents and brother ( 10 years old) have gone through - destroyed - 3 HP laptops in the last 2 years. 2 of them snapped in half at the hinge and basically disintegrated all had major display problems and multiple keyboard issues i.e keys popping off.
In contrast my Sony Vaio has been running strong for the last 3 years with several hours of use every day.

over the time ive spent having laptops, every toshiba ive had has burned out. i personally think tosiba laptops are crud. overpowered, under vented wastes of space. ive had 3 toshibas and all of them have burned out.
i have a hp netbook which i am yet to have a problem with.
the best usage i get, is from acer machines. my old ace was pushed to the max with overclocking and never gave me the slightest bit of jip. untill my stupid mate smashed the screen. now my main laptop is also an acer. absolutely bullet proof.
