I did a bridal show a few weeks ago,
It generated some sales, I was quite pleased. One lady emailed me and asked If I had a date open: (11/11/11) at the time I did.
three weeks passed, and The lady had not phoned me to book her consultation and reserve her date, I assumed she found someone else and Booked with another client.
She emailed me back asking to reserve the date via email again: I told her she was too late.
She emailed me back and "ripped me a new one"
I was unprofessional
Didn't inform her that date was taken
She's going to tell all 8 of her friends who are getting married not to hire me.
It's too bad there are clients like this one, However I get a feeling now that she might have been a difficult client to deal with.

She certainly does! I have had a few clients like that in the past and even called them up to put the pressure on as I had not received a deposit and another client was willing to book the same date. I always end up being the jerk when the client waits till the last minute to retain my services.
Your probably better off :)

Yeah dont sweat it Marcel.
She was the one not being professional, she should have secured you there and then with a deposit.
You're better off not working for people who behave threatening like that, imagine that sort of attitude when drunk...!
No thanks.
Just enjoy the fact you are in demand.

I should put some verbiage on my website something like at my shop:
All dates are first come, First Serve. No exceptions.
Right now all it says is:
Dates are not reserved until a deposit(service retainer) is paid AND contract(service agreement) is signed.

Either way, you should definately explain this when people ring you up.
Tell them if you are free but they need to secure that date with cold hard cash deposit before someone else does.
It's not nice having someone disgruntled but all you can do is be clear and professional.
Even then you will come across angry people.
Good luck with it.

screw her , and the moose she rode in on .....
she's one of those clients who don't take responsibility for her events and then throw anyone
convenient under the bus.....
glad you booked it with someone else
i think your disclaimer is fine, if any tweaks at all , i would say lose the word deposit ,or use the word differently .....
i.e. the retainer fee for my services must be deposited with me in cash , and the contract signed in order to reserve your
event on your date .....merely expressing an interest in my services will not reserve your date, there are no implied
agreements
the problem is clients only understand the word deposit , but a judge might be unwilling to recognize it as a legal term ....

Where do they get them and How do they find me?
Potential Client calls 4 weeks ago to book a wedding, They don't call back to Arrange a meeting.
3 Weeks ago they call and express interest still.
2 Weeks ago they call again and express interest. This time I finally nail him down to a meeting.
He calls on a Saturday evening while I'm at a wedding during Cocktail hours and ask If he can come sign the paperwork that night.
Uh... NO!!
Fast forward to today.
Meeting scheduled for 7:30pm, He calls and says he wont be able to make it till 9:30pm and asks If That's ok.
When I ask why, he says:
"Because I have to stop at the mall first"
I inform him that I have another client coming over for a consultation at 9:00pm and will be busy (very much true, I signed them YAY ME!!!)
He got a little rude that I wasn't making it F**k**g easy for him, I suggested he try another DJ company as I don;t think I will be suited for him and his new wife.

i always ask people for their email address to send them a detailed proposal/quote (after asking many questions about their event)
Some say to me "why dont you just tell me over the phone?"
I say to them "I will but I would like for you to have a a copy for you to go back and compare"
At the the bottom of that email i always write the following...
This quote is valid for the next 14 days only.
Prices and availability may change without prior notice.
Service, price and availability is not guaranteed until all parties have signed a written agreement.

We do that at the shop - quotes/estimates only valid for 30 days
Might have to start that for my DJ stuff as well.
