So i've played a few house parties and got great comments all around. I recently got a call from a friend who works at a club asking if i'd be interested in doing their thursday nights (college night) which would be awsome for me...I just have to submit a demo cd. How long should I make it? I was thinking 10 songs around a half hour long...but i've heard people say an hour, and i have a couple friends who think it should be like 5 minutes bc the managers are so busy ~ any help?

IMO only as long as you need to show them what you have. To me if it takes a half hour to convince them, then you need to work on it. 5 minutes is enough if it's good. This way they will want more instead of giving them 30 or 60 minutes up front. Just my opinion.

If this is a college night on US soil, then you WILL be playing Top40. There is no possible way to do a demo in 5 minutes.
First off, the bar is in business to sell booze. Period. The job of the DJ is to create an exciting energy level that will do two things:
1: Keep people in the establishment.
2: By proper programming, rotate the dancefloor to keep people buying drinks.
If you think you can demonstrate these skills in 5 minutes, then hop on my unicorn, we are chasing leprechauns.
Any bar that is going to make their decision on entertainment, based on even 30 minutes of a DJ mixing is a bar you should run away from. They will throw you out with yesterdays garbage on a whim if some kid comes in with stolen music and the desire to work for a couple beers and nothing more.
I would get a face to face meeting with the decision maker. Until THAT happens, you DO NOT have a gig.
