Ok, so I have a 3K budget and I was getting ready to order the EV Lives Tops and Subs and some other stuff. The question is do you guys think I should go with this set up now or go with some cheaper tops and subs (Behringer, Harbinger, etc) and spend some cash on lighting? I have never used mobile lighting but I really want to as it looks so much better and can make it more profitable.

Personally I would spend the money on the sound and piece together lighting down the road.

It depends on where you dj at..........sound was last for me cause every where I djed at had sound and I don't do weddings or karaoke so we choose lights first.
It all depends on your needs and what you do.

Sound is always important. If you are doing mobile gigs, you may wow them with the lighting for the first hour, but if your sound is crappy. It may not sit well with the crowd after a while.
I am primarily a bar/club DJ. Most bars/clubs I DJ at have sound and lighting already. There are those rinky dink bars where I would have to bring the full set up. Sound-wise I can't really skimp, but for lighting I can get away with a Micro galaxian and 2 Chauvet tridents. If I do a Prom or some other party, I just add a fogger and I am good to go.
Invest in sound and pick up lighting as you go along would be my 2 cents.

I have your answer...
I did many tests...
And I can conclude that the sound system is the most important thing, never buy cheap speakers or cheap amps, even if that means you have to go out with only 2 light effects.

Ask yourself what kind of gigs you will be doing mobile? small or large party, then what can you give them more for there money so the next Dj will not get the gig.I think you should get the (DMX) lights.People sometime think when you see more at a party they feel like they paid more for what they got and seem to be happy with that. You can play for 200 & less people with 2spk and 1 or 2 subs AND a Bomb ass light show and get more gigs out of that and build your light/sound up as you go.

If your a Dj then that means sound, you don't Dj lights, so if Djin' is what brings the money then you need a GOOD Sound system first, period, but if you do light shows, then by all means...... get the lights...

Maybe you could buy purchase one sub for now and purchase some lighting. Then add your second sub on down the road.

EV Lives now... lighting is nice, but comes second to sound in my opinion. Besides, ADJ & Chauvet are always coming out with cool new stuff, so waiting may benefit you down the road.

Yeah I thought about one sub and some lighting but I am a sound guru and that just wont cut if for me. I need lots of deep bass so I'm going with the EV Lives now and then will get some lighting in the very near future. I agree that sound is most important for me at this time I can always rent some lighting if needed for fairly cheap until I purchase some.
Thanks guys for all the opinions!!!

@ PsKeens. All you need is 2 of the EV ELX115P 15" 2 Way Powered Speakers and one EV ELX118P 18" Powered Subwoofer. The light i am using is Two American DJ Tri Phase L.E.D.s and two Chauvet Derby X L.E.D's. They look really good.

Sound, sound, sound and sound...!!
I've worked in professional stage production for years as a senior lighting tech, and I can tell you, in this case, sound is the most important of the two.
They will be hiring you for the music, if they want a lightscape production they will get one.
Audio all the way - Get a big sounding rig - and a couple or Par64 Cans (great lights) and you can easily rock it.
I know it's tempting to get some movers and HOG now, but seriously, it's about the music so get that right first, then get the lighting toys later.
People will not forgive mediocre sound for pretty lights.

Lighting is cheap. Even if you have to get some colored lights at a Home Depot to start.
I did installation work for a club once where the owner said people go for the lights before sound. I thought that was crap because it really has to be both in order to rock the crowd properly. I balance my spending between lights and sound with more money going to the sound.
Put quality into your audio system first. Keep it modular so you can sell your services to small gigs... up to big rooms that pay well. Work hard, and then you can afford some nice lighting eventually.
Until then use your inginuity to for example: wire together some colored bulbs for some uplighting around the gig room. You need plugs, wire, utility boxes, sockets, and colored bulbs with flashers. For $50 you can get some nice color effects for the room. Just make stuff safe so there is no hazzard to the guests.
When I started doing gigs there were no neat lights from a Musician's catalog. I had to build everything. Made a wood box with a half mirrored ball, motor, and 2 pin beams. Made little wood boxes with egg strobes. Cheap stuff. It worked till I could buy good lighting.
I watched the classifieds and bought used lighting. I went to auctions and found interesting things I could use. I've accumulated a garage full of stuff over the years. Keep watching eBay for any great deals.
Now I'm moving into DMX and LED. Next are 2 lasers. Hard work will pay off for you. Good luck.

JimL

Light effects are so cheap now it's not like the old day where you had to make a choice, all this ADJ stuff cost a couple of hundred bucks for 4, maybe used but so what.

Okay, I think I am going to go ahead and get some lighting as well. Not skimming on the sound but throwing in some lights.
IF I gave you 600.00 and said to buy me a lighting package what would you suggest? Give me 600.00 worth that will look decent and I can add to later to make a great looking show.
Thanks in advance for all your help

I would have to say that sound and lighting together are more important. You want to offer your client the best audio and visual entertainment value so that you leave an impression and every person at the event with the entertainment you provided.

for 600 I would get everything from ebay
2x par 64 rgb leds $200-$250
1x derby light $200 or something that is a centerpeice and spreads light around the room
enttec open usb dmx interface $100
cheap smoke machine $40
t-bar light stand $40
freestyler dmx software controller $free
SBDJ' freestyler plugin $free
That setup should last you a couple of months until you get some more cash, then I would look at getting a hazer, better stands a couple more parcans or panel lights, 2 moving heads and a laser probably in that order.
