im curious as to how macs can handle the heavy load from dj software? a lot of them seem to have processors and ram that is really low...800mhx processor and 300ish mb ram??? how dos that work??

I much prefer using my MAC over my Win7 Sony for VDJ!

Processor speed and memory is not everything, its how well the OS uses those resources. Granted 2.2Ghz is much better than 800Mhz but I'm saying you have to have both. The MAC OS has always handled media files better than Windows and is why it was much preferred for the music and video industry for many years. Windows has come a long way now and Win7 actually handles video/audio very well. Honors still goes to MAC though for now.
 
ive only tried a mac once and that was about 8 year ago. so not too farmiliar really hence why i ask.

anyone any idea what the ibook g3's are like??
 
I think you're looking at decade old mac hardware. They tend to be at most only a generation behind the high-end PC market, so on-par with the top spec consumer stuff.
 
tbh im not sure what im looking at lol. im thinking of buying a used mac but have no idea what to look for. pc, no problem, mac, well thats a different story.

i have also considered a hackintosh system on my acer 5920g but from what ive read there are some problems with items not working. such as lan and wifi.

what about powerbook??

If you are looking at used equipment make sure its Intel based chipset and CPU, not the older PowerPC processors and chipsets. You really need to look at a system that is atleast Mac OS X v10.5 and above in order to run most current software. It would be best to be at 10.6 which is Snow Leopard.

If you get a MAC with good enough specs you can run Parallels Desktop and install and run Win7 as well or run BootCamp for a dual OS System. There are many many options out there. Its like the age old What speakers to buy, it all depends on how much $$ you want/can spend.
 
have you had any troubles with the installation huey?? does everything work as it shoulld? sound, wifi, enet, card reader, webcam etc??

there seems to be very few people having fully working systems when it comes to hackintosh installs.
 
 
If you get a mac get one with an intel processor....Not sure what your budget is but if u r looking at macs u can get a refurbed one from directly from Apple with the standard warranty & all that for around $500
 
im looking to spend as little as possible tbh, im a surgeon when it come to repairing hardware so im planning more on repairing one than buying one already running. missed out on a few 15" powerbook g4's this morning because my bids werent high enough. however, im a patient man and tend to land huge bargains quite regular.

i am pondering though, what i should be loking out for in terms of relitivly new models?
 
Look for an intel based mac if you are wanting to run VDJ. Models from 2008 and up would be fine.
 
"800mhx processor and 300ish mb ram"??? Are you looking at a PowerBook from the 80's?? I know you're on a budget but a Mac with those kind of specs are way below the minimum specs to run VDJ. VDJ doesn't even support any Mac operating system lower than 10.4 Tiger, and I'm pretty sure a Mac with those specs can't even run Tiger. I'd hate to say it but if you're serious about DJing you need to spend a couple of more bucks on a decent computer, otherwise you'll be on this site daily complaining that VDJ keeps crashing, is slow etc. Even if you're the world's greatest "surgeon" there's nothing you'd be able to fix to make a Mac that old run VDJ (or any other somewhat recent software) smoothly. Save up a couple of bucks and buy at least a fairly recent used MacBook pro.

re-think in order then lol.....

ill work something out. im not necessarly looking to use it in conjunction with vdj, more looking to educate myself on the mac os.
 
there are far easier ways to do that.
 
lol, not really, theres only so much you are allowed to do in pc world...i dont think they will allow me to tear down the operating system and play with the system files and security settings etc...i wanna be able to abuse it and maybe kill it a few times while im deciding if i prefer it over windows.

@dizzyrocks, macbook pro? ok ill look out for one and see what i can find. if i can grab an older one in the meantimes for dirt cheap just to muck around with then ill do that too.

one of the main things i needed to know was what to look out for model wise.
 
I'm running a basic Mac book and I have NO problems with running VDJ and a couple other apps in the back ground. Never crashed or freezed up on me. Just my 2¢!!!
 
If you are going to look for a MAC, I recomend an I5 or I7 procesor, now that the new MacBook Pro is out, the first Unibody Macbookpro is cheaper than before.

I have an I5 17" MacBook Pro 2.5 ghz dual procesor I5, 4 gb ram and 500 gb HDD and it is the best investment I have ever made. It won't come cheap, but let me tell you, it is woth every single peny I spened on it.

erm yeah, when i can afford up to 1k for a laptop ill gladly buy one. however i can't so that's not gonna happen.
