What benefit is there to limiting the amount of time a track can preload?

by not accidently loading a 3 hour set on on the fly and it using stupid amounts of system resources. which will in turn cause problems with your sound or your software.
i know this from experience. ive done it several times. lol.

When windows runs out of ram then they use the pagefile (virtual memory from hard disk).
You can imagine what will happen in this case. Not necessary a crash but slow to death.
From when computers was invented the slowest part on them was always the hard disk... !
Another reason to use a memory limit is simply because you want your tracks loading fast.
It makes sense for normal tracks to load them in memory (virtualdj decodes audio in memory in pcm uncompressed wav format for best performance).
But if you want to play a big file, say a mixtape, you don't want to wait to load it in memory in full, even if you have the available ram.
Hard disk streaming is just fine for tis case.
So this is not only a safety option but also for performance. That's why it is located in the 'performances' tab.

OK thanks.
I have several pre-mix sets that are 20-25 minutes. Would 30 minutes maximum be acceptable for a good maximum preload?

If you load two of them this is about one hour of uncompressed audio, so it is about an audio cd 600-700 mb.
I suppose a modern pc with 2gb ram and windows 7 can handle this, but loading time will be an issue if you play these files in normal sets.
So it depends on the way you use them. You have to try and decide what is acceptable for you as waiting time.
I usually don't preload files bigger that 20 min, but that's me..
