Hello from North Carolina, Im Djbigdave new to the forums and new to the software part of djing. I have been a dj for about 8 years. Took a break for about 2 and ready to get back into the swing of things. I have a stanton mixer, numark cdn35, samson db500a,s and a gateway laptop that runs vista. So, my questions are,
How do the cd players work with VDJ? Does it show the cds in screen, or is VDJ not in use when playing a cd?
Am I capable of using my mixer to control each deck, or do I have to do it on the software itself?
I have read a ton of things about the software but not sure if my system is compatable.

This software takes the place of CDs. You take the music off the CDs, and put it on a hard drive. You rock the party using mp3s. This software also allows you to play videos, and karaoke. One software to do all three. You can use your laptop to control the software, but most professional DJs use some sort of controller. There are so many on the market, and VirtualDJ, supports them all, or will. There are also some controllers that will also play CDs. You can also control the software with turntables, and time-coded vinyl (a record with data on it, not music). The Cd player, and mixer you have, will not control the software. Welcome to the forum.

You can see a selection of popular MIDI controllers on the following page: http://www.virtualdj.com/products/hardware.html
Or you can use timecode CD's with your existing CD players to control the song playback in VirtualDJ: http://www.virtualdj.com/products/timecode/cd.html - For this, you will need a sound card with at least 4 inputs and 4 outputs (2 stereo), e.g: Hercules DJ Trim
You will also need the full VirtualDJ Professional to be able to use MIDI controllers and/or timecode: http://www.virtualdj.com/buy/index.html (Some MIDI controllers come with VirtualDJ LE which you can upgrade from at a discount.)

Most 2 channel DJ mixers will have a line in and a phono in for each of the two channels, as well as a toggle switch that will allow you to change the signal route on the fly. In many cases, there will be a switch on the back side of some kind that will allow you to switch the phono to another line in. If this is the case for you, then you can use timecode and regular cd's at will. You will need 4 splitters that are single male RCA to dual female RCA. The splitters will plug into the RCA line outs from the CDN-35, effectively giving you two left signals and two right signals per deck. Like it was suggested, you will need an audio interface between your laptop and the CDN-35
The Audio interface will need a left and a right signal FOR EACH DECK. Google search USB audio interface. An audio interface basically converts an analog signal to a digital signal and back again.
Now you will need cabling to go from a left and right line out of the left deck to a left and right input on the audio interface. Do the same for the right deck. It is important to note again that EACH deck needs it's OWN input on the audio interface. Then each channel on the interface should have a corresponding left and right out. Use cables to oute this signal to the line in for each channel on the mixer. You should have another left and right line out for each deck on the CDN-35 by using those splitters. Run these right to the mixer on the phono/aux line in.
Now you can use the toggle switches for each channel on the mixer to switch between the signal route directly from the cd player and the signal route that goes through the interface and the computer.
The free home edition of Virtual DJ will allow for the use of timecode for 10 minutes at a time. You will need to purchase a Pro license in order to use VDJ with no limitations.

if you still want to use cd's like i (used to do) b4 i went with my numark ns7 sell your current system and start fresh. but two cdj's be it be denon dn s3500's like i had and or the newer models dns 3700's (but they cost alot of $) buy a mixer 2 channel/4 channel what ever suits your needs. and buy the Rane SL2/SL3 what ever suits your needs. then you can dj with your cd's still & use VDJ with your laptop. but honestly after a while i didnt even use my cd's anymore. so i just sold everythang and bought the numark ns7 and have never looked back. what i do from tyme to tyme is bring along my numark cd mix3 and hook it into the (AUX) onmy ns7 so if someone brings up a cd and be like hey can u play song # blahhh, blahhh i can still play cd's

I didn't want to lose the ability to use CD's either so I bought the Numark Mixdeck - best of both worlds. Virtual DJ midi controller and 2 CDJ's built into one convenient package. No more worrying about wiring everything up just plug the USB cable into the Laptop, or if you don't want to use the laptop the CDJ's still work without it.
