BPM is an acronym for "beats per minute", which is the tempo of the song.
The beat being the part of the music that you tap your foot to, so the BPM is (basically) how many times you tap your foot in a minute.
The pitch is the placement of the musical notes on a scale. For example middle C is usually quoted as being 440Hz (cycles per second).
If you change the BPM or tempo of a song using a "pitch control" on a turntable, not only will speed (BPM) change, but the pitch of the music will also change, so middle C will no longer be at 440Hz. It will go up or down with the tempo.
It's generally accepted that a speed difference of around 6% will change the pitch by one semitone.
Modern DJ equipment often has a "key lock" (aka pitch lock) function, which will maintain the pitch even when the speed is changed.

in lamens terms,
pitch changes the sound of the vocals/backing track when it is increased or decreased accordingly to the BPM.

so I can increase a bpm from 80 to 100,? but as long as I adjust the pitch the vocals will sound normal?????

I think you need to read the explanation again!
The pitch control in VDJ adjusts the BPM (or tempo, or speed) of the playing track.
As a side effect of this, the pitch (i.e. musical note) will change.
To prevent the pitch changing, you need to engage the pitch lock or keylock function.
With this engaged, you can change the speed without affecting the pitch/key of the music.
