Now this is the best thing I've seen in a long time, lol!
The idiotic policy of DJs with a following is whats destroying your business. Example: I tell you I have a following. You hire me> All my peeps come to hear me spin> Of course they're gonna like my music!! But they ARE NOT GONNA COME EVERY WEEKEND!! So if I'm really a WACK DJ, your other customers are gonna STOP COMING TOO!!!! As an owner, you panic, and keep hiring promoters and dj's with a following, NEVER CREATING AND IDENTITY FOR YOUR VENUE!!!!
Your best bet is to hire the best ALL-AROUND DJ (or team of DJs) and create a buzz FROM WITHIN!!! That means PROMOTE FROM WITHIN!!!
That has been the formula for some of the most successful, long running clubs in NYC History: Limelight, Studio 54, Paraidse Garage, Roxy, hell even The Shadow is STILL GOING STRONG after 20+ years!!!!
I've been DJ'ing too long and strong to be submitting demos and asking my people to help resurrect a dead spot!! I would rather work WITH the venue in creating a consistent identity that will be mutually profitable.
AND TO YOU OTHER DJS: STOP SUBMITTING FULL_LENGTH DEMO CDS!!! If I'm an owner and can get 30 dj's to submit CDs, I won't have to hire a DJ!! DUUUHHHHH!
What you think about this one?

It's funny, I just had this conversation with my club owner two weeks ago. He gave some 22 year old "promoter" Tuesday nights. I believe you should never promote a DJ, promote the club. What happens if the DJ leaves for what ever reason? The DJ's name should be on the last line of the flyer. Tuesday nights are terrible. It was called Crossover Night, featuring Latin dancers and Latin music. As the numbers continued to fall, he blamed it on the name, saying people thought it meant Gay. Who in their right mind thinks a Gentlemen's club full of women, is a gay club? So they changed the promotion to Tabooty Night, (Taboo is the name of the club), with all these big booty women. This madness goes on and on, and clubs continue to open and close. You hit it on the head. Besides, any you tube poster can have a following for a couple of weeks.
Oh another thing, I never make full demo Cd's. I had a club owner thought he was gonna be slick, and put in a VCR tape, (see how long ago that was) and tape my performance. Hey, it was his club and equipment. That was the worse programing I ever did, the tape was useless.

About 20 years ago, I interviewed for a job on Chicago's north side. 800 N. Halsted to be exact, the club is long since closed. There was a line of people, bartenders, waitresses and, DJs waiting to be interviewed. When my turn came the owner walked the line and said "If you're a DJ, and you don't have a demo speak up now." So, I spoke up. "Why don't you have a demo?" he asked. My answer "Because, there is no way to prove to you I am the person mixing on that tape. If you want to hear me mix, come see me live." He never came to see me live.... He hired me on the spot. Moral of the story, demos are for people trying to get their foot in the door, not for those with doors already opened.....
