Tópico: My daughter wants to be a DJ - Page: 1

Esta parte del tópico es antigua y puede contener información incorrecta para la nueva versión.

Like the title says, my 15 almost 16 year old daughter wants to be a dj. I'm trying to figure out what is the best inexpensive piece of equipment to get for her.
she has a netbook, and that's really all she has right now.
I'm looking to see what would be a good very inexpensive controller to get for her to start learning how to dj.

The numark Dj2go will be you best bet to keep the cost low.

Seconded - but you'll also need to get her a pair of USB headphones so she can cue separately to the main output.

Check on Craigslist for a Mixtrack Pro.

I 2nd mixtrack pro or a Hercules RMX....they are both pretty cheap on craigslist.

Mixtrack Pro will give her a great overall experience for very little coin from Daddy's pocket.

Mixtrack pro all the way!!! It has a feature set that covers the traditional 2 turntable layout style (not an exact replication mind you:) but she will get a feel for platter cueing, pitching, mixing/EQing, and also features some nice digital Dj features. It has a built in sound card that works well enough.

Plus, you get a perfectly good copy of Virtual DJ LE that works seamlessly with the mixtrack!

Schmidi

PS I suppose you could also get a Vestax Typhoon for her too. Same features set, and a little more stylish/more street cred I suppose?

I am leaning towards the Mixtrack Pro or the Typhoon.

It's been sooooooo long since I was a beginner DJ that I may have forgot all the starter things. I started out on Techs and there was no such thing as a CD player. There were no CD's. Just cassette tapes and reel to reel.

I'm gonna get her a set of powered monitors and the vestax or the mixtrack Pro.

What am I missing? I feel like i'm forgetting something.

Oh.....
What are the minimum specs for VDJ and either controller?

Is there anything else i'm forgetting?

Laptop processor wise: Any intel core 2 duo, i3 or above. AMD wise Athlon X2/X3/X4 or Turion should do fine. 4gb or more RAM. AVOID durion and Celeron (bargain cheap shit that is lacking processor cache [key shtuff for music processing]

A dedicated video card (Nvidia, Radeon) is a big bonus and will allow for the possibility of video mixing down the road! Intel HD won't cut it I'm afraid.

7200rpm HD if you can get one internal, or better yet, use the internal HD (likely will be 5400rpm) and get an external 7200rpm drive for the mp3's/vids etc. Solid state is sweet, but WAY overpriced for the amount of GB you need for a decent library.

A shirt. No, I'm not kidding. Have you seen what female DJs wear, or not wear?

I have a good girl. I have been blessed with good kids that are not into the crazy stuff out there. Don't get me wrong as I am not stupid enough to think they are angles... (Daddy is a DJ in the clubs and KNOWS what's up) but my girls are not like that,

I was not cursed with kids that are just like me. I was blessed with kids that are better than I was.

Of my 10 kids and step-kids only one of my sons, DJ SpinFiniTe 23, and my 11 year old step-daughter DJ ZaY have wanted to learn and stayed with it. A couple of the others got into it briefly but their interest fizzled out later. My son got lots of my extra equipment to do gigs then bought himself a Numark NS7FX by the time he was 20. My 11 year old step-daughter however uses my American Audio VMS4.1 but also knows how to use all of my other gear. The VMS is basically hers which I personally think is a great instrument for kids and adults alike. Get your daughter a good used one off CL if you don't want to spend $500 on a new one.

The only thing I don't like about the typhoon is the EQs and lack of hot cues. I think the Mixtrack pro is laid out better although the typhoon is better quality build.

5 are grown up and 2 live with their mother, my ex so only 3 are at home. Ages 10 to 15 so it's not so bad!

The Hercules RMX is on sale at GC for $178, prolly not on the site.
