Tópico: Database disaster!

Este tópico es antiguo y puede contener información incorrecta para la nueva versión.

Was adding new tracks for this week and accidentally right clicked on the drive letter instead of the video folder to add to database. After realising I what I'd done I stopped it, then did it correctly. Video, mp3 and Karaoke databases are on a 1Tb external hard drive.

Didn't know til I was at my gig I did a search for a particular track and noticed none of the mp3s were coming up, only videos. On checking my system all my videos were fine, but, my mp3 database (22,000 mp3s) had lost all analysing data and cue points!!! Luckily, I play nearly 100% videos and only play one or two mp3s at a gig.

When I checked my system at home I found a copy of the 'VirtualDJ Local Database.xml' file from November, 2010. I figured it would be quicker to copy that file and re-analyse my videos for the past 2 years rather than 22,000 mp3s. Left it running overnight then had to redo my playlists today. Everything is almost back to normal, although, I will have to redo my cue points as I go.

Needless to say, as soon as I finished, I made a backup copy of the 'VirtualDJ Local Database.xml' file.

yes, keep a copy of the database file in case something like this happens again. Also, if you use playlists (not virtual folders) back those up as well. The virtual folders are held within the database file. The playlists are m3u files that will easily import to anyother application in case you have to use something else or use another computer system. They are stoed in the virtualDJ folder in your my documents folder. You would just have to match the drive letter to what was used when the playlists were created.

You want around the world to get across the street, your information was still there in that database all you had todo is find your main mp3 folder right click and "Add To search database", but the probable reason you couldn't find your files was because the small icon in the browser upper right corner next to "files" in "View options" was set to exclude "Show Music"..

Next time just copy your database file in the same directory everytime you make addiitions or changes as a rule by right click and hold on the file, then move to the right and choose copy, .... you'll wined up with a dup of your database with the word "copy" in front of the name and every subsequent copy will have a number, so no mix ups on each consecutive copy of the same database file...

Good Luck,

Joey...

This is why i tell many to Make " Actual " folders inside your hard drive and " Not " with the DJ software. Even if you dont back up your music and the software gives you problems, You files are always there in the same order.

@JoeyKJ - Incorrect assumption, my information was not 'still there'. No, 'add to search database' would make no difference as the data was gone. The 'VirtualDJ Local Database.xml' file was a fraction of the size it should have been. You cannot conjure up data from an empty file. It would have took days to re-analyse 20,000 mp3 files.

The small icon in the browser was not set to exclude 'show music', I couldn't find the mp3 files because they (and their data) had been wiped out of the 'VirtualDJ Local Database.xml' file. I've been using this software for 5 years professionally and know my way around it pretty well. This was an unusual thing to happen and I still don't know the reason why.

BTW I did mention that I backed up the database file after the repairs. :-)

@Calientel123 - my mp3 and video databases are in 'actual' Windows folders and sub-folders and have been since 1998. I've used this same structure with VTT(Virtual TurnTables), PCDJ Blue, PCDJ Red, PCDJ FX, PCDJ VJ, Tractor and VirtualDJ.

I think it would be useful for the new version 8 to include a backup facility for the database info file as it's such an important file.

Would be great if it backed up the actual DB (and any external HDD ones) to VDJ servers (or a cache on your HDD if not connected to the internet) every time VDJ is shut down.

Better yet, backup the data inside the track's ID3 tags (optionally of course)
