Got my second ever paying gig coming up, a middle school Halloween dance party, three and a half hours worth. I have no idea of what the tweeners are listening to these days, so for the current popular stuff I was planning on taking a page from the Disney Radio playbook and going off their top songs (Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Bridgit Mendler, One Direction, Pitbull, etc.). Any other current popular suggestions, or perhaps for some good Halloweenish songs and some oldies from the '70s, '80s or '90s that might go over okay?
Also, some ideas to get the wallflowers out on the dance floor and mix it up?
Trial by fire for this newbie here, any help from you hardcore veterans is much appreciated!

For what's currently popular, billboard.com, alot of middle schoolers will consider themselves too old for disney. I usually use songs like Monster Mash, Thriller, Ghostbusters, for halloween but my audience is usually much older too

Actually, I just checked the Billboard Top 20 and they're all in the Disney Radio chart as well. Guess Disney's pretty hip these days!

Disney is on the right track as long as you use the original artist versions, but if you stay radio friendly versions of top 40, and urban formats you'll be good to go. They will def ask for thriller, thats without question, you can throw in some other cheesy ones too. biggest song right now for the kids is gangnam style, IMO. have ready cupid shuffle and the wobble for line dances as well as cotton eye joe (rednex) and you should be fine. Im in the philly/jersey market and i dont think kids are much diffferent anywhere else, well maybe in Wyoming.

My bad, I thought you meant Disney labeled artists. I would still use Billboard myself though, it is very comprehensive but more time consuming to sort through.

Skrillex scary monsters, baby got back, wobble, train = drive by, and 50 ways to say goodbye. also have a request pad on the table so they can request songs on it. This way they won't be in your face the whole time asking for a song. They will still be in your face asking, but the pad will help a lot. And make sure all songs are the clean radio versions or this will be your last middle school dance.

I would get disney soundtracks. Some Selena Gomez music also. Heck I even played some Glee music! I dont think they would be that much into oldies music though, other than the real popular stuff like thriller that was already suggested. Good luck!

Thought i could point you in the direction of using the new cloudlist feature, many DJ's can help you out with their playlist.

I wouldn't play 70's, 80's or 90's. Play top 40, Clean version of Hip Hop & R&B, pop, Dance, etc.

I have 32 years of dj experience. I currently have a number of schools under contract for the past 22 years. I have never played any radio disney tunes. I do however play Disney artists. The biggest hits are gangnum style and 1D. Also play all of the line dance hits, electric slide, cha cha slide, cotton eyed joe, Cupid shuffle, wobble. Middle school kids are fickle and the line dances work well especially for the shy ones. Also, any song that has a dance associated with it such as Apache, YMCA, teach me how to Dougie, John Wall, etc. As stated earlier, play only clean versions. I have watched many DJs get fired for playing the wrong song. Request sheets are a must, each school has a unique set of songs that work only for that school. Thriller is still by popular at all of my schools. Check the local pop station for their top 10 list.
Hope this helps

congratulations on your second paid gig
i think kamakuakane nailed it .....
the line dances and the songs with a dance? are very popular
the actual halloween songs i think are tricky .....i don't think you'll have much
success with monster mash, thriller etc ......
try the time warp and get the adults to join in
speaking of the parents and teachers, they have to like it also , so maybe one or two
70s,80s,90s,scattered around each hour will be well received .....
clean versions only......
as always the requests are often made by persons who don't care what the other 150 want to hear, so
remember you are not there to play every request..... turn down bad requests politely , and say you are
running out of time, or don't have it, play the best choices to fit what will make most of 'em
happy ....
as far as the wallflowers go ..... get a cattle prod, that'll make 'em dance ......
somewhere there's a psychiatrist making a career out of studying them ......

Great suggestions all, guys, especially for the line dance and novelty songs. I'm definitely gonna throw in Thriller and Ghostbusters, and a couple other oldies here and there for us geezer adults. I think Time Warp will work fine for young as well as old, especially because of its Glee appearance. And yes, I'm going for the clean versions of the current stuff...not interested in getting tossed out on my ear!
And thanks for the congrats; it feels so good to at last be making (good) money having fun, doing something I love to do. <3
Now to get some more gigs...
