So, the wedding/private event company I am a part of has a website and through the host, we all have an email address. the president of the company checks our email...logs in using the passwords set up when we go the email service and has replied on our behalf (without our knowledge) to client's inquiries. To protect my client's addresses and information, I changed my password. Without my permission and knowledge he changed it back to the original password. Was that legal? I deleted all the emails, forwarding information pertinent to upcoming gigs to my personal email - was that the right thing to do?

From what I read so far, in the US this is perfectly legal. Company mail is considered to be company property and you have "no reasonable assumption of privacy". If you are mixing your private business with their business I suggest you separate these. Furthermore is these actions of the presidents cause trouble with specific customers I suggest you simply talk about it.

However I don't believe it's legal ANYWHERE in the world to respond on someone's mail pretending to be him...
I don't know the laws in US. However on most European countries (my own included) e-mail (and traditional mail) is protected against unauthorized access. The mail/e-mail is property of the recipient, no matter what. Unless it's a "public" address (e.g. support @ companyname dot com) no-one can claim legal access to your e-mail account. Not even your own ISP. They need a court order to claim LEGAL access to somebody's mail. Same rule applies for authorities as well. It doesn't matter if the company you work for provides you this e-mail address. They don't have the legal right to access your account.

I would suggest you to ask a lawyer though. These laws can be different from country to country and even from state to state at the US.

Thanks guys!
