Great article by DJ Worx
http://djworx.com/brand-wars-why-do-you-care-so-much/
There are too many DJ's out there that live by the mentality that if you are not using Serato or Traktor with Pioneer CDJs or Technic turntables and Rane mixers then you are not a real DJ because those pieces of software and hardware are industry standard.
No matter what gear or software you use, it does not matter in the least to the eyes of the people who are in the club or bar and having a great time. The only people who will look down on you for what tools you are using are other DJ's. There were many comments about egos and how some DJs feel butt hurt if they see another DJ kicking ass and using something they view as inferior since they spent thousands of dollars on what they say is "industry standard."
I love being unique by using VDJ with a controller or some other piece of equipment that is not Pioneer or Technics. Most of us who have been playing for years can use anything that is given to us and dont need to be force fed propaganda on what the proper tools are or what makes a real DJ. Just my 2 pennies.

Totaly agree :-D
While the so called "industry standard" gear will usualy be a good size step up in build and sound quality from entry level equipment. The price of joining the club is, imo, far higher than the value of the equipment. Is a Pioneer mixer so expensive because its worth it? No, its expensive because the manufacturers will charge what the market will pay. Don't get me wrong it is good kit. But value for money wise the differential between good kit and "industry standard" kit is far too wide.
I still own a second hand Pioneer DJM 600 and its good. It works well and has been fairly reliable. Was it worth the price when new? Not realy. Still it keeps the companys that make it laughing all the way to the bank.
A good DJ can make the party rock with reasonable gear and get the best out of what they have. A poor DJ is a poor DJ. What they play on makes no difference whatsoever.

That been said I wouldn't be without Crown, RCF, FBT, Shure and a whole host of other quality brands.
Try it for yourself, buy some of the crap thats out there and see how long it lasts.
I love these ADJ guy's that come on here advertising their products as really good, I didn't even get a full gig out of my ADJ light effect and after spending more that the light effect was worth on postage back n fourth to the manufacture I eventually chuked it in the bin.
I have some Abstract Twister 4's that I have used every week for 15 years and their still going strong.
At the end of the day use your own judgment, none of us are thick and we all know about Pioneers over inflated prices.

Yep :-D
Prob the best bit of advice you can give anyone Charlie :-) However will substitute "Thick" and just suggest that some are "easily influenced by hype and peer pressure" After all the companys DJ equipment arm shows no signs of going under ;-) Pioneer are just one of the worst offenders so a good example. Hence the term "reasonable gear". If you have something that works well for you and does what you want then stick with it. The badge on the front should not be the sole reason for buying it.
I use a specific model range of Crown amps because they represent good value for money and have proved themselves to be reliable for me. Others might not feel the same way and might for example swear by QSC (Another amp I have been happy with). The point being that I dont realy care lol I have a wide range of gear from lots of different manufacturers. As Charlie sugests. What I buy is based on MY judgement. I think where people get tripped up is when equipment or software is bought on the "You must have this!!! or you arnt a propper DJ" basis.

I have had quite a lot of gear since the eighties.
You tend to find most of the really cheap gear is pretty bad, however the top of the range gear sometimes isn't worth the money.
I personally tend to go mid to top end however my last Pioneer product was a DJM-500 I bought new in 1998. It has done literally hundreds and hundreds of gigs all over the place until I got the MC-6000 a couple of yeards ago and now my 10 year old has it in his bedroom and it's still as new. I know Pioneer may charge over the odds but I'm amazed that mixer has done so much and lasted so long. Now I think Pioneer prices in the UK are over the top and their brand doesn't really interest me any more. Drop them 10 to 20% and I would think about it.
Conversely there are some cheaper products that do perform well and others that are just rubbish. I'm not going to mention my worst bit of gear on here as I got in to trouble last time :)
My home Technics seperates system and Wharfedale sub speaker system were both bought in 1990 for rather a lot of money and are used every day so if you divide the price over 23 years it's not an issue.
Like most things you can buy cheap and throw it away or buy expensive and it will last.

The message of the piece seems to have been somewhat lost. My entire point was about how people are loyal to a brand and feel the need to hate upon those who don't use what they do. You guys use Virtual DJ as your software of choice, but if you come across someone who doesn't, do you call them out, tell them they're wrong and generally heap hate?
THAT'S what I was writing about. I don't understand that mentality. Why does it matter what anyone else uses, just as long as what you use works for you?

It's Apple that does it for me just now. I have several mates with MacBooks, ipads and iphones who basically deride anyone who uses Android or anything else that's not made by Apple.
They have the gall to praise Apple all the time but on the other hand complain everything is locked down and not compatible with anything else.
It really gets on my nerves but I just ignore them now.

Completely agree, but you know when you raise a topic like this it's always going to bounce in 101 directions... ;-)

What a coincidence you bought your DJM-500 just as the "CDJ Revolution" started. Like many hardware manufacturers back in the day, the greater their success, the worst their products got as profits over took quality!
My Numark PPD-1975 was (and still is) an amazing piece of kit. A 4 second digital sampler on a mixer purchased in 1988/9 at the same time I bought my 1210's!
Back then kit was made to last - that's why you paid top dollar for it. Not saying expensive kit won't last, but anyway we are covering ground we have already been over many times.
My point is that many manufacturers like Pioneer rely on people referring to them as "industry standard" and create an image that fools people. The Apple machine is just as bad...
At the end of the day, the 6-7 digit salary marketing directors are earning only as long as people believe it...
Cheers,
Roy

Skratchworx I don't think the point is lost. I think that so far you have been hearing from the balanced and sensible opinion gang lol.
Posting the same question on several Forums would be an interesting excercise. Perhaps some very different answers would appear. One of the reasons I love VDJ is that the community tend to support rather than hate.
All DJ's I am sure will have all come across the individual who comes up at some point in the gig and starts of with "Hey i'm a DJ" and continues by refering to some bit of gear or software that is a must have. I seem to remember a thread a while ago where someone was overlooked for a job just because they use VDJ and not Serrato. Not sure that was down to hate but definately involved a level of ignorance. Actually there are a good few members here who use VDJ and other softwares like Serrato or Traktor as well. Not because one is universaly better than the other but because they might use different software to achieve different things depending on what they are playing and there playing style.
I guess the hating happens everywhere to some extent. From the Kid who gets hastle at school for not having the latest Trainers on, to the scruffy looking guy who might just be a Millionare getting refused entry into some country club or other. For some appearence is everything. Its a shallow world out there.
It will be interesting to see if anyone actualy fesses up to having disrespected another working DJ for what they are using to get the job done and pops it on this thread. Would be worth reading the justification for it, because where I am coming from there is none! :-D

I have hated. Not because of the gear but because of the quality of the mix. If you can not beatmix without watching the waveforms or know the diffrence between a 16 and 32 beat intro you are just getting lucky by the night of the event(st.pattys, thanksgiving eve, and what not or the intoxication of the crowd. Seen lots of people with expensive gear that can not feel the music, but think they are the s**t. A good Dj can spin on almost anything they can bend the pitch(by ear)!

Stop being a brand whore and you'll be fine.
I purchased VDJ PRO over Traktor A6 because I like how easy and straight forward VDJ PRO is.
Mark @ DJ WORX does a great job with reviews and honest opinion of product, Skratchlounge (where I reside) is strictly a turntablist forum (part of the orginal Skratchworx before Mark created DJ WORX) and we live and breath the art, so finding a fair opinion of controllers there will prove difficult.
Regarding hate towards Apple/PC, SSL/Traktor etc. I just get tired of the arguments. I use what is best for my application, that's really it.
If you want to use SSL more power to you, but don't say I'm not a "real" DJ because I chose VDJ PRO. You can kiss my big ole white butt, pucker up buttercup!

I haven't experienced any "hate" for my use of VDJ but I do get "that look" from time to time.
With that being said, I've worked gigs with multiple DJ's, one running Serato on a Mac with a Vestax controller, another DJ using SSL, Technic 1210's, Rane mixer and his Mac, one gent running Serato on his Windows laptop with a Numark NS7 and me on my Dell lappy running VDJ with a Mixtrack Pro. And the party rocked on without issue regardless of the DJ or the gear used at any particular point in the night.
Generally, folks that insist that their way is the only right and true way have issues with self-confidence and how they think they are perceived by others.
And I'm sure some DJ's that have dropped a small fortune on gear get a bit miffed when a party is being presided over by a "newb" with a kit that cost a fraction of his/her investment.

learned a lesson last week.. I had a cue button fail on a numark controller.. the two stores I went to said " 6 months for the part". If this is true I will never buy anything they sell. Has anyone else had issues with getting things repaired? I had a issue with a laptop dropped of Thursday to ups had back Tuesday.. that's the service I need... I want to hear anyone else having this issue.

It's probably a standard cheap part that's used in loads of other products.
If you take it to someone who really knows their electronics, I bet they could replace it for you in an hour for a few bucks.

Seems like "6 months" is the standard for Numark. I've heard a ton of people bitching about how long it takes Numark. But like Groovin said it's a pretty standard part so you should be able to find via the net.
My 2 year old pulled on my iPod when it was in the cradle on the Mixdeck! Yup, snapped the board right off. I used this site, http://www.instrumentalparts.com/numiprosppa.html
And what ya know, every part you need for your Mixtrack, lol!!
Enjoy
