Virtual DJ is a tool for DJ's to live mix finished songs.
If yu want to produce your ownes you need a Software like: Ableton Live, Cubase, Logic Audio, Fruit Loops or something like that.

You could try Audacity.. It is free and is a surprisingly good music/sound editor but lacks many features you would want if you are serious about making music. Try it out and play with it, but if you really are serious, save up and purchase one of the apps that Heiko mentioned. It's always better to have the right tool for the job.

Audacity is not music production software, it is strictly recording software.

Plenty of good free music making software available:
Anvil Studio : http://www.anvilstudio.com/
MuLabs: http://www.mutools.com/mulab-downloads.html
Nano Studio : http://www.blipinteractive.co.uk/download.php
And let's not forget the old but still effective Rebirth : http://www.rebirthmuseum.com/
As for audio editor, indeed, Audacity is noteworthy and multiplatform.
