Hello all!

I just started playing on virtual dj with my numark mixtrack kinda old model but still i feel great about it. Btw i just finished studying about beat pattern and was able to do some decent mixing after 3hours of practicing it. My question now is what should I study next?

Best,
Alvin

Youtube other dj's watch how they mix and try to repeat.

Thanks I will do that. But the problem is sometimes I have no idea what title of the song is. Is there any updated list of songs here? Btw. Im having a problem mixing hip hop songs. Any advice?

Best,
Alvin

You can find out artist & title with a smart phone app like Shazam. You can also find music playlists on YouTube and stay current with Billboard Top 100 and iTunes. I used to listen to Sirius XM while driving and write down what I liked since its displayed. Theres also a site that will give you what was played on every Sirius XM channel by date.
Rap is one of the hardest genres to mix but once you learn your music and develop technique it can be allot of fun.

What does Key means? And what does it do? Should i be mixing Am with Am songs also?

Great choice of software;-)

Record your mixes..post in 'music discussion' forum, if you dare..wait for critiques and learn from your mistakes.

Google 'how to mix in key: virtuldj.com'. Theres plenty of threads to learn from.

Happy mixing!

You can mix Am (8A) tracks with other 8A tracks or with 7A, 9A & 8B.

Look up info on the Camelot Wheel or Camelot System.

If you go to the mixedinkey web site, there's a "book" there called Beyond Beatmatching which explains things.

I've always been about have a solid basics foundation.

1) Counting BPM. I know this is no longer needed with software doing it for you, but this leads into the next thing, which is,
2) Counting Bars
3) Beat matching manually (by ear)
4) Phrasing your mixes
Once you are very proficient with these
5) Memorizing what keys go with what
6) Practice, Practice, Practice

Optional if you are going into hip hop
7) Work on your cuts
8) Practice scratching

I tried the camelot wheel. Wow it really works. I tried using the opposite side key and the songs goes wild. Thank you for this. Very helpful! :)

Btw when you say phrasing with mixes what does that mean?

How do you keep your folders like? For e.g All house goes to House folder? Or do you make folder for specific artist?

And my numark mixtract doesnt have sample effect button. Does this mean i have to click it by mouse? About effects/samples how do I download it? And where should i put it for it to show on my VJ software?

Note: Sorry for asking so many questions. Thanks in advance. :)

You can find a lot of info about mixing right here, in the forum called Mix Lessons, at the top of the page.

I also suggest that you take time to read the Virtual DJ manuals. They will answer many questions.

As xcakid suggested give this a read, http://www.virtualdj.com/forums/6288/Mix_lessons/DJ_MIXING___basic_-_advanced_-_pro.html?page=1

Sometimes when mixing hip hop you will need to mix on a snare or cymbal or hand clap instead of the bass drum, once I figured this out hip hop got a lil easier. Practice is the key; practice, practice, practice.

Listen to all kinds of music not just what you want to mix, try to identify phrases, the bridge, get a feel for the structure of music.

Good luck and have fun,
T

Thank you for all the advices.

When crossfading songs. Do I still need to look for their keys? Or i can Crossfade any keys? How do I apply new effects? After downloading it.

learn to mix blind.. set up the play list in order of bpm.. then turn off your screen and use the controllers load to keep chaining songs.. now your mixing blind..
