i'm talking about control your business

not workarounds that shouldn't be happening

i think one way to control your destiny is to make it known that you have standards and expectations

from your customers .... if they drop the ball, either..... you control it according to the contract or

you can not take the gig

i am a believer that you can stick to your standards, not be a whore, not be conceited and still have a reasonable

way of doing business.....

most of our problems stem from selling ourself short so don't do it

of course ....

ok i quess we need to turn this around .... i am thinking to myself .....dizzy's got it goin on , does a really good job......

but he's getting pushed around .......i hope not but seems like it

look the clueless rude uncaring-about-there-party don't give us problems , because .....we care and we handle it

you don't have to just not get the gig.....just control the process, don't reinvent the wheel each time out.....

anyone with a shred of decency will be a little guilty about not being prepared .....

there is no "provisional" anything, including deposits..... there is a retainer fee non refundable, there might be a balance,

if so it's paid in full before the gig..... if no requests are specified on the contract, then there could still be requests but they aren't

an obligation , and they would cause you to run into overtime ......i have an "appeaser" clause .....if any circumstances result in less

music getting played i still will play the requests on the contract.... this means i drop some of the tunes i picked to go with

there requests and, i don't charge them for my lost time

I wouldn't say I'm being 'pushed around' at gigs per se, but I definitely would say I have to put up with a lot of crap when it comes to requests. I like your idea of putting the requests in the contract, I was just curious to how you deal with clients who are resistant to agreeing to submit requests at the time of booking. I like your idea of not being obliged to play a request unless it's submitted in the contract. I think I'm going to add a similar clause in my contract. What do you do when the request list they give you has a lot of floor clearing songs in it?

so far i have only had a couple of instances where they were really bad about it

i usually tell them that we need to stick to very popular trax and keep many of those new as well

if they can see the wisdom of that you can handle it

also they can hear there own faves any time ,don't they want there quests to be happy with the

popular party music??

i have done way more strip club djing than i can stand to remember, and that stands you in good stead when

you have difficult people ( like the strippers )

be prepared to deflect......enlist the girlfriend / wife ........have some good lists of recent hits that you have culled

also , get them to pick some mainstream tunes they like, claim to be unfamiliar with mixing anything weird,

(but don't call they're weird crap weird) tell 'em grandma

probably doesn't dance to type o negative or korn ......usually there is some way to get them to understand that

they need to let you keep it flowing , fun and mainstream ........you've probably seen some of those

"top 200 fill in the blank " lists ....top 200 80's , 90's etc ????? show them there tunes aren't listed and that's a problem because

there guests won't know it and they won't dance....... ask them to tell you about a recent party they went to and what was played

to get them to take responsibility and give you requests explain how you have a very convenient streamlined process;

they have a reserved date when they pay the retainer fee (half)(non refundable) AND include the requests with the payment,

then they only need to pay the balance before the gig this is for new customers ... i am more lenient on repeat business

but when you start out strong with a customer you can easily stay that way ........

When I was doing clubs, you couldn't get next to me, because I refused to take request because people always want the buzz kill song or 99.8% of the request I was going to play anyway. Now that I'm doing mobile gigs, I send a link to the clients for them to send to their guest, so they can make their request in advance, because unless you're a bride who has enough cleavage to make me say sure, no request!

Terry is dead on, do not refuse the drunk! Send the bastard to get another drink (Especially if you have drink tickets), show him or her to the closest hot chic or dude in the process of saying sure I'll slide it in! (Knowing your not) or one of my favorites, "give them a shoutout and say something like, 'YO, Big shoutout for so & so for requesting this song right here, play it (But have a follow up song ready to get back into the flow) They're either about get some love or smacked up! (9 out of 10 the latter)

Always remember that you're the puppet master, so you play their strings, not the other way around! Sure I always say, give the people what they want, but I also make sure they know, I'm a DJ, not their IPOD, so if you want Katy Perry played when the house is jumping to Rick Ross, nobody is stopping you from putting your earplugs in and going outside!

all good stuff coach

the hot chic or the shoutout would fall under my guideline "prepare to deflect" .......

they're like kids ... a toy , a treat, a compliment..... they forget the justin bieber request
