I recently started using Virtual DJ and messed around with it a little bit and I have a few questions.
1) Why is VirtualDJ frowned upon, and why don't many famous DJs use it? Most of the famous DJs use Serato or Traktor.
2) What is a good controller that is compatible with VirtualDJ that is about $150 or less?
3) Can you actually DJ a party with VirtualDJ? I've never seen anyone use VirtualDJ outside of their room. Like if you go to a club, no DJs there use VirtualDJ.
Thanks in advance.

What famous DJ's are you talking about, I'm famous. Tiesto, Guetta, Harris, Avicii, SHM, and a few others don't use software at all. Are you basing your choice on what others use, or what's best for you? Are you going to buy the same helicopter that Tiesto has?
Pioneer, Hercules, Numark, Gemini, and a few others have entry level controllers. Find one that works best for you.
Four of the seven DJ's in my club use Virtual DJ, one uses Serato and two use Tracktor. Maybe go to more clubs.
Actually, all the DJ's here are famous, and the software does not make you a great DJ. A great DJ can use any software, we just happen to like Virtual DJ better. We all have choices.

to troll or not to troll. as that the question?
2 hours and 26 minutes of video loaded to youtube going back to 2006 using virtual dj in the same club
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLlmv6st4aTvfH8w0altbg4V5mTQQi9OeC
the other clubs in the area have other dj's using some other programs but they all have one thing in common: us crushing them. define professional software again?
we're using it in 3 clubs, all of which are successful and the main club (featured in the videos) is a cash cow I have worked at for the last 15 years.
I tried all the different programs before choosing VDJ as the one to use because it made more sense to have video capability BEFORE the other dj software programs had it and it kept our club at the forefront.
I can't say anything about controllers - don't use them and don't have time for them, too busy with crowd.
serato fanboys in this area all have one thing in common - they can't compete with us.
thus endeth the story.

1: Also a simple reason: they use "other software" because they get paid for it...;-)
3: If you see a guy doing video gigs, you can bet, he is using Virtual DJ. Depends which clubs you are into..;-)
Just visit the Music Video Forum....there are a lot of video dj`s

One thing that does nark me about VDJ is the pricing stucture, I have absolutely no desire to mix video, ever, we have someone who does that. Yet if you want to download tools you have to pay full whack. Surely if you have bought any version, tools should be accessible, even if it means paying a nominal fee.

@locodog
the pricing structure offers more value to the user than the company get's in profits. That's why I was saying they should change less for the initial buy then $50 for updates and upgrades eg as you are saying. $100 for the software, $50 for timecode, $50 for video, $50 for midi then when an update comes along charge $50 for that too. It would mean atomix would eventually make the difference back and be more profitable into the future. But in your case Loco, you will get more value if you buy with the current pricing structure, there is no point bitching about it because your wrong.

Ok, same reasoning, if I drive a Skoda, why can't I have what the BMW user has... oops, maybe's because he has paid for it.
Fact of life, you only get what you pay for...

Oh come on. Apart from a controller where did the OP mention price??
If you wanna talk about the cost of the software then go here: http://www.virtualdj.com/forums/184661/General_Discussion/DJ_software_prices_.html
Don't think there is anything for me to add as AMAHM has said it all.

I think what locodog's saying is there's no "audio only" version of VDJ at a slightly cheaper price point for those who don't want or need video......ever.
Why should he have no choice but to pay for a function he'll never use?
The same question often gets raised about controllers. Why is it only the very top retail product which supports controllers? There are a great many low price controllers around these days, and yet in order to use them with VDJ you have no choice but to buy the most expensive version - often costing more than the controller itself!

basically a legitimate question...but the other way round:...how much would be the difference between a version with or without fullscreen video output ? 10$, 20$..less ? and could this be a reason to decide to buy VDJ or not...? honestly ....i dont know...

Hello
So define Famous? Famous in what way? Famous to who? Am I famous? Nah...
I have used all sorts of software over the years. Bottom line is I could care less what other "DJ's use" or how they look at me for using Virtual DJ at the majority of my gigs. I don't mean to brag here, but I honestly feel I am a much better "DJ" than those Dj's who seem snarky because I don't prefer their software set up. Or because I no longer use Techtonics 1200's. But then again, I do have a busier dance floor than they do. I can still "out" dj them using their software of choice.. So it is what it is.. All personal Preference.. who cares what someone "famous" is using. If you are hoping to become famous.. You will do so not because of the software you use.. Doing a darn good job at what you do will make you famous..
Bottom line is all I care about is the music sounding the best quality it can out of the speakers, and keeping that dance floor packed and bringing lots of energy to my decks.
I wonder what clubs you are going to that you get to actually see the software the DJ is using. I prefer gigs at Bars/Clubs etc that the GP doesn't really have direct access to me.. In other words. I like a booth or a stage that GP doesn't get to come up and pester me or screw up my gear. ;) Even better are the DJ booths that are on a second level where I get to look down on the crowd they can still see me... but anyway... that is besides the point..
I do sometimes swear I am jumping ship, because I like the effects of say a different software better and maybe one other feature, but over all I actually like VDJ the best... In all honesty..
Can you actually DJ a party with VDJ? If I can DJ a club, bar, tavern, Wedding, etc with VDJ. Why couldn't I dj a small party with it? I could KJ a karaoke party with VDJ if I really wanted to... I don't want to btw..
Finally DJ controller for 150 or less. EHHH.. I am now seriously questioning the validity of all your other questions.
I think you should just purchase the Ion Que deck. you can probably pick it up for 50 or 60 bucks on ebay with a NewMark Cue softwares. Its basically like a newmark Hercules board, just simple. nothing too fancy.. the numark cue is a special LE version of Virtual DJ.
I am guessing you are using Home, and home version of VDJ does not support controllers last I checked.
Good day

I understand that perspective synthetic, my scenario is that our rig owner bought pro to play out, I have the full deal when I need it, so for practice/database management all I need is home, I'd like to have a licensed product of my own
$49 for broadcaster, is a good deal to get the effects for free (I have no desire for other skins or samples, in both cases I can make my own, nor do I see the broadcasting ability useful when I could just pre-record or broadcast on the fly by other means ) So perhaps I'd download 20 effects @ a cost to me of $2.50 each. I'd still like to download tools though
Lets move on and pay 2* the price of broadcaster for pro basic $99, what does this offer me, microphone support, useless to me, advanced sound ouput options, useful but given I can work around this limitation with home, I'm still essentially paying for the ability to download effects. and I still can't download tools.
So now Pro full 6* the amount of a package that only just falls short of what I want,
Let's see what I don't care about,
Full video output I'm guessing a lot of R&D expense goes into video development
Timecode likewise with this.
Controller Mappings, If I have a controller it will be home made thus this is useless to me, but also you use 1 or 2 controllers yet you are paying for every single one, why not sell these separately
So what am I paying an extra $250 for that broadcaster doesn't offer me? HID/MIDI support and downloading tools, and 'lifetime' updates which could end tomorrow
As a home user I'd pay $5 a piece for tools, I'd pay $3-4 for effects. I'd pay $200 for an Pro Audio (no video) option if it was updated and tools and effects were free, The current structure doesn't give me enough options or incentives to buy when I can get do plenty for free.
Anywho /bitching over
Sorry for hijacking.

I really wonder if Microsoft or Apple have discussions about the companies philosophies in their forums like we have here...;-)
( sorry for being a little bit ironic)
As far as i can see we are talking about unlaid eggs, because no one knows if there will be the same structure or not...
so everybody just enjoy the actual version and look forward for the upcoming V8...
peace...;-)

Thank You.

Oh but they do have discussions about Company Policies and Philosophies in forums they are those sneaky forums called Board meetings as well as share holders meetings..
None the less, I remember vaguely once posting or attempting to post something about Atomix should do this or that with their policy. However I don't know if I actually posted it or not. Liquid whiskey might have been a factor at the moment. None the less.
I am eagerly anticipating VDJ 8 with high hopes for my mind to be blown!

Can you use the DDJ -SR with VDJ, or is it strictly for serato?
If you can do you have to map it out?
