I'm currently fixing up an old 2008 Macbook Pro, and I was initially considering using it for Djing, however I recalled that it heated up pretty quickly, and got really hot. How could I prevent this from happening?

Get a fan. Point it at laptop and turn it on. Should keep it cool.

And be sure to try dusting out the laptop, with compressed air or seomthing.
 
I don't suggest using any MacBook Pro(2008-2009) for DJing outside the home. They have a common problem with the video from overheating. The heating and cooling of the motherboard and GPU causes them to split apart and the laptop is no good after that. I have serviced many 2008 MacBook Pro's with this issue in the last year or two. Apple even had to extend their warranty back in the day due to this issue. It's a well know problem in the Mac World.

Well crap. Maybe I'll try selling it once it's back up and running and get a newer version...was the overheating problem somewhat fixed in the 2010-2013 versions?
 
The bottom of my old 2010 macbook pro always felt like it was frying. Check out Asus's. You'll get more plugin options with windows as well as more usb ports over having a mac.
 
Yes, problem has been solved in newer models. Two things that I warn people to stay away from as both have the same problem. MacBook Pro and the original x-box.

If I can get them going again by cooking them in the oven or a heat gun I hate to say it but I always recommend them to sell it asap as they usually last 3- 6 months after the repair I attempt. I can usually get 6 out of 10 to work. Hopefully when they sell them off they warn the new buyer of the problem it had.
 
Latest news that came to my ear just announced problems with the early or late MBP 2011 with AMD chip not with a 2008 intel model.
Seems that they all are dying right now.

Myself, I don't do warranty work so I only hear about issues after the warranty period is over for any/every electronic product.
