Tópico: Fixing attached jack on a shotgun mic?

Este tópico es antiguo y puede contener información incorrecta para la nueva versión.

Ok, this has nothing at all to do with dj'ing but I'm hoping somebody here can advise me what I should do. A couple weeks ago we (me & the fam) were cleaning out my grandparents house to get the house ready to sell. In my grandfathers video gear (I grabbed everything from his workbench including an old school vhs editor as well), I found an azden ecz 990 shotgun mic which is something I really need. I hooked it up to test it (it had been sitting in the basement collecting dust for around 15 years) & the sound went in & out along with static noise, I doused the connector in contact cleaner & it sorta worked, sound was good but still when I wiggled the jack I got some static noise & went in & out just a little bit however if nothing touched the plug it worked & sounded just fine. So my question is, is there any chance that the problem would be anything other than the plug? I can have somebody patch a new connector on it no problem, but I don't wanna tear the plug off & end up making it any worse either. What should I do?

Oks. To start. What type of connector is on the mic? 1/4" jack, 1/8 jack, XLR or other? Is the Mic a Condenser type (needing a battery or phantom power) ? Perhaps a pic would help.

Thanks for the pic :-D almost certain to be a bad connection in the Jack itself . Moulded right angle jacks are quite bad for this. Worth having a new one fitted but have an inch or so of the cable cut back as well. Worst case, if the cable is faulty further up it should be possible for a repair shop to replace the whole cable and plug.
Sometimes a faulty or tarnished battery connection can cause crackling. But this should only be noticeable if the mic is tapped or rattled.
If you are using a 1/4" adaptor it would be worth having the plug changed for the correct type instead.
Be aware that a bad connection inside the socket you are plugging into could also cause a similar problem. Have you tried your equipment with another microphone?

Sweet, thanks for the advice!! Yeah through my zoom h2n, my tascam xy mics work perfect, same on my t3i. 15 years is a long time to be collecting dust I guess lol

No probs. good luck with the fix :-D

Just to update, got the mic back today with the new plug & it's working like a champ now!! The long range setting isn't as good as I'd like but with a boom pole should be fine for capturing dialog;^]

looks good timmy...reminds me to pull some mics I have in storage and check them out with vdj...that is if that mic config is working in v8?

Thanks!! I wouldn't know about that one, normal gigs I just hook up the wireless mics through the NS6, Karaoke or video add on packages I hook the NS6 and all mics to a Zoom R16 to record to sd and then sync with video afterwards.

hmm,no mic on my Xponent controller.something tells me I might have a issue here.if i have to try adding another audio device the system might not agree..will check..

Cool :-D
Glad to see that you got it repaired ok.
