I have a dj io sound card that no matter how I change the settings sounds terrible. I also have a Versaport sound card that works great. I wanted to go with the dj io to get the 24 bit sound quality as the Versaport is only 16 bit. I have a pc windows7 64 bit 6 gigs of ram etc. I just can't understand why the djio sounds so bad, I have tried every possibe change of settings and nothing improves the sound quality. I have version 7.4 pro of VDJ.

Please help,

Steve

There might be some trick to improving the quality (that I don't know), but my understanding is for highest quality, both the source (the music) and the play back device should match bitwise.

What format of tunes are you playing?

Also, how does it sound using M$ mediaplayer, VLC etc?
There are many causes for shitty sound quality, you need to be methodical to isolate the problem. First any software/drivers the i/o card came with, then M$ control panel, then the cables. Perhaps earthing/grounding.

I'm sure someone here can help, you just need to document more what you have tried.

The sound engine in VirtualDJ v7 and earlier is based around the CD standard 16-bit/44.1Khz, so there is no real advantage of using a 24-bit sound card, especially if you are mainly playing 16-bit/44.1Khz MP3/WAV files or 16-bit/48Khz videos. In fact, this can cause problems in some cases due the software having to convert the sound to the different format on the fly.

However, the new sound engine in the VirtualDJ v8 supports these higher rates, but again there is no advantage of using these unless you are actually playing files that have been mastered at 24-bit and you also have a very good quality sound system. You should ideally set your bit rate and sample rate to match that of the majority of files that you are playing.

NOTE: If you still have problems even at 16-bit/44.1Khz, please ensure that your computer has been optimised for DJ performance: http://www.virtualdj.com/wiki/Performance%20Issues.html
