Tópico: Play till 9 or 10??

So Saturday night I played a VFW here in the states,(much older crowd). She said start at 7PM, and they'll be done by 9PM or 10PM.(??) I'm thinkin', well, it pays. 1AM, the place is packed, dance floor full of old people having a great time. Many of them veterans. VDJ8, all video, flawless!! Just flawless!!

So your negotiated price was for 3 hours but you ended up working a total of 8 including set up and break down? A video & karaoke VFW 6 hour gig is worth $300. I hope you got that or more because whatever you made is now the standing price.
These places have a tendency to grow tired of a dj and when money is tight they will find a replacement to undercut you. Get paid what you are worth!
If you are having fun doing it then all the better. Nice to hear 8 is working for you.

Glad you and your clients had a great time. DJECoast, I never discuss how much I make on a forum, because you never know who may be listening. However, $300.0 for a 6 hour video gig in my state, is crazy. I know some of my competitors are getting $200.00 and up/per hour for a gig like that.

I think I need a green card, Rick any chance you could adopt me!

Damn, $200 - 300 a hour? Thats wedding rates in my area. It may be unprofessional to talk about what we make but I just don't want to see anyone being taken advantage of. I suspect most of us charge according to time and for us older guys four hours can take its toll on lower back and legs. So when 4 hours turns into 6 it can become a physical challenge therefore someone better be coughing up some extra cash.

VFW's in my experience are pretty good about that but the OP has yet to make mention of it. However my additional concern is now they are going to expect the 7 - 1 which will obviously have a bearing on the agreed upon rate.

Unless the OP is a laid back cool dude who just likes to party, keep the floor packed and isn't concerned about the money. Me, I'm all about the money..... its a business, not a charity.

I could adopt you, but in a week you would want to join a union, saying you can only lift 50 pounds, need a 30 minute break every 4 hours, double time on holidays, sick pay and health care.

Ah Gentlemen, Gentlemen, IT'S NOT ALWAYS ABOUT THE MONEY!! The gig, upper Michigan, middle of no where. And yes, the gig paid well. But the reward you get from getting a 70 year old, retired marine, out on the dance floor, dancing to Pitbull's Fireball, now THAT"S priceless!! It was a very fun night!
