If I'd had to hook up to a single speaker on my old Denon mixer I'd just flick a switch for unbalanced output. I'd hooked up my old Channel 600 Watt speaker and it sounded crap as. Is there an unbalanced option in VDJ?

Balanced and unbalanced are all hardware based, not software.
You can switch the audio to be mono in the software, however, your mixer may also be able to do this.
You may just have a gain staging issue. Can you list all of the equipment involved and the order of connection?
