What would be the preferred starting up and shutting down sequence between the CPU running VDJ 8 with USB connected and AC powered DJ controller?

Me personally, I default the audio sound card to basic before shutting down VDJ. If not the next time you use VDJ it might still behave like it's still connected to a controller. Next, I turn off the controller. By the way your controller isn't going to break if you turn it off first or last. Afterwards I disconnect the external hard drive if I'm going to use the PC only afterwards like surfing or something. Or you can simply shut down the PC and unplug your external hard afterwards. Mainly turn off VDJ so that the hard drive won't be in use. Either of these steps can be pretty much done in any order just make sure you select "eject" hard drive before unplugging it.

There's only ONE rule:
1) Start VirtualDj last on your sequence, turn it off first.

Other than that there are not right or wrong steps to do anything.

Even that is not an absolute requirement, although you may have to open config and press Apply to have the audio working if you connect the gear after opening vdj.

That's the method that I follow and have never had a problem!

And turn amps/speakers on last and off first, no big bangs then

Great!
thanks.
