A couple of years ago someone showed me a setting or some code (I can't remember) which enabled me to change the colour of tracks in my browser that were under a particular bit rate, resulting in all tracks under 224 bit rate being coloured blue. The problem is I now can't find how to turn that off! Does anyone know?

There is no option to turn off the color in the browser. You may add color in your browser and minimize the column or reset your color-tag:
To reset color put this script on a custom button (this will remove the color of your tracks, think about it!!)
Mark your tracks, klick on the custom button and the job is done ;o)
I agree with you. A better way would be to have an option for the browser view to keep the color-info.

browsed_file_color "reset"
