Tema: Your opinions on DMX lighting with VDJ?

Este tópico es antiguo y puede contener información incorrecta para la nueva versión.

Hi everyone,

I'm been browsing through some threads, but want to reach out for some personal experience. DJing has always been a side job for me for almost the past 20 years. I bought into the hype of cheap stuff that sounds "good". I got into sound engineering and was truly able to hear, and see, what top of the line sounds, and looks like. I've been transitioning to higher end gear for my personal use ever since and haven't been happier. The old saying is true, buy once cry once.

My light show is something that i've wanted to work on, and have, over the past 18 months. I currently have a mixture of LED and halogen fixtures. Just about done fazing out the halogens for LED. That being said, all the lighting fixtures are now DMX controlled. Knowing that VDJ integrates into DMX has been a big item i've wanted to look into more. I've been shrinking my mobile setup with higher end gear that can perform the same (and many times better) than what i've had before. Smaller, lighter, and generally better performing is my goal.

With all that said, I was looking at virtual DJ as the front end of my lighting control. My intent is to setup scenes that I can recall from the pad in the VDJ interface for different scenarios, dance music, cocktail hour, slow dances etc. I know these would all have to be programed ahead of time and that's not the concern, but wanting to see if recalling the scenes are possible with the VDJ interface.

I've looked at a few products. Freestyler seems to come up quite a bit and have looked into the Enttec and DMXking (Pro models with RDM) interfaces to go along with this. The majority of my lights are ADJ, so I have looked at AmericanDJ MyDMX3. DASlight was other option I looked at, as well as Sunlite which I believe can do what i'm hoping to accomplish with my end goal looking at a tutorial online.

Has anyone else had success programming scenes into VDJ for their lighting rig and have any recommendations? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

I'm interested in this subject as well. I'm still using an American Audio (DMX 512) Deluxe Scan 250 and it still works (around 14 years now). The new ones are so much better and barely use up any electricity.

All the options you looked at allow with one way or another to recall "scenes" / "cues" from within VirtualDJ.

Just to make it clear though:
All the job (programming, setting up, e.t.c.) is done in the DMX software itself. All the VirtualDJ can do is to instruct the DMX software to recall a "program/sequence/cue/scene" e.t.c.
In other words VirtualDJ can act as a controller for your DMX software. You cannot control and/or program light fixtures from VirtualDJ itself.

Thanks George, that's exactly the response I was looking for. Regardless of the software that I went with, the process was to setup the scenes in that editor (freestyler/daslight/sunlite etc). Once the scenes were built within that software, essentially use VDJ as a "recall" function to access these scenes that were built within the editor, knowing that VDJ couldn't directly edit these.

Thanks again for the insight, so I'll probably start with Freestyler since there seems to be a good amount of support and a compatible USB interface.
