Tema: What is benefit of prepared stems
I have a Macbook Air M1 with 256 Gb, the memory used for stems files is significant, about 70 Gb.
Is the quality of the prepared stems better compared if VDJ has to do the job 'on the fly'?
If not, it would be an option to remove all stems file and put the setting to 'manual'

No the result is the same
So if your laptop can handle it - and your M1 based Mac should indeed be able to - then simply leave the stems separation type on "always", and no prepared stems will be created, unless you manually tell VDJ to do it for a track

Yes as mentioned, no difference with quality, of stems, NO benefit.

You asked for benefits,

Benefits of having prepared stems:

1) Stems instantly available, no time required to calculate the stems. (with fast GPU this may only be 5-30sec difference)*

2) Longer battery run time if on battery power. (no need to do the energy intensive calculations for each track loaded)*

* for the above 2 reasons, I switch to reduced quality for reviewing tracks and setting cues etc.

3) One can now have all the stems files on an external drive, while keeping the original tracks on your internal smaller drive. (Stems can be stored separately on another hard drive)
One can add an external ssd or flash drive of 1 TB or 512GB respectively for about $50-60 USD, with USB 3.2 speeds.

Benefits of doing Stems on demand:

1) No additional storage ( each prepared stems takes an additional 3.3-3.7X of the original file size, of additional storage, so a 1MB file would need say 3.5MB for the stems, a total of 4.5MB. requires 4.5 times your current track storage, if precomputing all tracks)

2) always have the latest stems separation, (as the stems AI improves with time, with future updates)

3) Necessary if using online streaming services.

And in reality, may be best to do some of both:

Have tracks that you expect to use often, have the stems precomputed, and review your precomputed tracks periodically, and monitor, last played date, for track to remove the saved stems, if disc space if of concern.

And as always VDJ has built in all the flexibility and tools, so that everyone can tailor their own unique best ideal solution.
