I'm in the process of building a rackmount computer for VDJ4. It's going to be used primarily for music videos, motly in vob format. I notice that Nvidia cards are the recommended card. Just wondering why? Is there something about the ATI cards that they don't perform as well with VDJ?
As for the Video Ram, is 256mb enough, or should I be getting 512mb? DDR2 or DDR3?
I've been an ATI card guy for years, so I am curious.
The cards I'm currently looking at are:
- ATI X1600 512mb
- Asus 7300GT 256mb DDR3
- Asus 7600GS 512mb DDR3
- eVGA E-GEFORCE 7600GS 512M DDR2
- eVGA E-GEFORCE 7600GS 256M DDR2
Which card should I be going with?

I have 2 systems currently using ATI with no problems what so ever one using an X600 pro and another using an ATI Radeon 9550 256 mb AGP. I am going to upgrade the one to the ATI X1600 512mb soon. I have tried the Nvidia cards and personally don't like them. That is just my preference.

I use a laptop, so not exactly the same sort of deal. But no problems with an ATI card for me. People with other makes always seem to have problems with hardware acceleration.

I use an ATI x1300 512meg mem and I throw video, visualisations, slideshows and karaoke graphics at it, I'm very happy.

Having found that my system isn't really up to doing 4.0 justice, I'm keen to upgrade (among other things) my video card, which is currently a 5200 on a PCI slot.
Any reccommendations on a suitable AGP card for VDJ that won't break the bank? I've budgeted around £100 or so, although spending less would obviously be a bonus!
Oh, and while I'm at it, what's a good CPU to replace my 2.6Ghz Celeron with? I don't know much about processors, dunno if these dual-core things are any good or not, heard some other people on the forum were having trouble running video with them...
Man this is gonna get expensive, all this new kit is going to require me to replace that 350 watt PSU as well... ;-)

6600GT is what the dev team has in their boxes (agp) I have the pcix version we did the expo with perfect results. I really dont like ati too much junk in their drivers.

Agree with Cyder, he is the VIDEO GOD when it comes to VDJ and he is very happy to help. If you wanna go the ATI route I have the 9550 AGP 256 mb card without problems.

it basically comes down to 2 things with a video card
1. Gpu speed if you look at the specs of 6600gt you'll see its a very fast gpu and you can easily overclock it if you need more but i haven't in 2 years
2. Video card Ram- Gddr3 is the biggest plus in an video card. Imagine it like this you have a bucket of water, and gddr3 is a big 4 inch pipe filling it where as gddr2 would be like a garden hose filling the same bucket. 128 is plenty for most people also 128 megs at gddr3 will out perform 256 at gddr2. Another benifit of gdd3 is it uses less power and runs cooler then 2.

Thanks Cyder, that's making more sense to me now! I'll see if I can find a suitable 6600gt for the right price on the interweb... There's plenty of 128MB versions, the 256 seems a little thin on the ground these days, I'm assuming the 256 is the one to have?

Well explained Cyder, I was talking about ddr3 in the other thread and it's performance. Now, 6600Gt is allready outdated model but there is new replacement models in the same price range like 7600Gs and 7600Gt. If you can, go for 256Mb, but you must be sure it is working at specifed clock because manufacturers puts 256Mb but it's clock is a lot slower than 128 model. To buy graphic card is harder than ever. If you get 7600Gt now, you are sure to get a good product.

128 ram on a 6600gt is more then enough for most people that will allow you at least 10 seconds of back cue without effecting the video.

Geforce 6800 is a good card, and basically all todays models (even cheap ones) have DVI and S-video output. There is 6800 Ultra also, but if you buy a new model now, go for 7600gt, it is a killer card!

6600xt looks pretty good and well priced at newegg, im thinking of a x700pro so hard to decide after all it isn't like your gonna be gaming off of your dj pc, its job is to make you money not suck it up

I recommend you (in this order) an N-vidia 7950GX2, 7900GTX or GT, 7800GT, 7600GT, 6600GT, all with DDR3 and at least 256MB of VRAM.
You could also buy an ATI X1900 or X1800 or X1700 or X1600 or X1400 videocard with the same amount of memory (256MB or more and DDR3 or 2)
This Video Cards work from excellent to very good with VDJ.
If you have to choose between the videocards you said, I will pick an N-Vidia 7600GT or the ATI X1600. Both with at least 256MB DDR3 RAM (or DDR2 in the ATI).

There are some problems with some n-vidia video cards in pci-express, I tested 2 difrent models and the results were the same, using hardware acceleration videos get frozen, I used the same models but in agp and it didn't happen, they run fine, now I tested with atiradeon x3000 in pci-express and it all went fine, I know that n-vidia gt are the best but is very rare that in agp the same models work fine and in pci-express, videos get frozen (n-vidia fx5200 is one of them)

The ATI x1300 512meg works well for me. Dual outputs, 512 meg ddr2. I never have video probs with that.
