I am having the hardest time getting the slide show to work can someone walk me through the steps on how to do it thanks

Ok let me say that I do know how to open the video effects folder and click slideshow and so on, but when I do that i am getting nothing on the screen as far as pictures go. Am I missing smething like a plugin of some kind?
I really want this too work for me and I know there is a simple mistake I am making.

On Version 3.4 it works fine but on 4.0 it wont any ideas?
