is a 5400 rpm external drive fast enough for audio and video? saw a nice compact 160 gig at office depot for 150 yesterday.

5400 is fast enough, but the faster the better.

You really only have three choices. 5400, 7200, and 10,000. (Which would be the ultra expensive Raptor drives.) Typically, laptop drives are only 5400 rpm which keep the temps low. If you were doing something which need constant access to the drive (like linear video or audio editing), I would suggest a 7200 rpm. Otherwise, even for VDJ 5400 would be fine. (Be sure to get one with a large cache which will offset the speed of the platters.

in my laptop I have a 7200 rpm. the 5400 wuld be for storing files on to playback with vdj. that external was small. it could easily fit in my backpack with the laptop, dac 3, m audio nd all my cables. I still have about 25 gigs free on my D partition but the more recurrents and classics I add it will fill up fast not to mention all the videos I'm ripping from dvds.
