How can i set up a file system so that the DJ's have axcess to the music but are unable to remove any of the files via a thumb drive or cd burner? Any ideas? But yet they will still be abble to DJ

If you shoot one of the DJs, the others will be less likely to try it. If that doesn't work, you could disable the cd drive and the usb port, physically if you have to.

what if you don't own a gun?
....
on a serious question regarding this....
what if you are currently using the USB ports and can't lock them down?
---
I had a similiar situation and I actually have the PC's locked down with passwords and encryption on the media drive.
It is the club's computer and I have to be the one to turn it on and make sure the other jocks leave it on.
There is a program that is free called Safend. (www.safend.com)... I am not sure if they still have the free version available but the one I am using has it when someone plugs something into the usb port it prompts for a password.. the password is the windows log-in password. I believe there is a more high end version with all sorts of features though...
I personally would hope the development team would just add a shell feature for VDJ and password protect the config menu. Shell meaning it would be the only thing you that turns on when you turn your PC on. The old PCDJ Red had that feature built in and it worked great. You could comfortably let others use your computer and they couldn't even access the desktop... couldn't minimize or get into the config without a password.

hey, have you ever tried "universal shield or "folder lock".universal shield you can lock all your music or videos or anything using universal and you program it let me just give you an example say you have locked your music with universal shield and you have program'd it only vdj can see those music. so if some one open goes to my computer then music folder he/she wont see them unless he uses vdj, anyway just try it and even read its help.
About folder lock it can lock any folder or drive and no one can access it.if that not enough for you try to use "USB LOCK AP" its among the best but be carefull with usb lock ap its difficult to use

Thought of the gun thing but the thought of all that blood on the computer seemed like alot of work.
Thanks for the ideas. I also found this on the net. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/registry-hack-to-disable-writing-to-usb-drives/
It's a little regristry hack that write protects the drive. there is also a hack to reverse it. You have to be loged in to chang the regristry so useres are un able to change it back.

The idea that VDJ should make a lock out function is a great idea let's see it in the next rev...

I was a former owner and user of pcdj red and I used the lock out function so that that the only thing that ran was pcdjred. It was a great feature. Keeps people from screwing with my pc and trying to take music of of it. VDJ should concider this feature!

You can protect your files from being copied by aplying security rules to the hd / folder where the music is. For this method to work properly you will need to have at least two user accounts in your pc. I have done this in xp pro. Dont know if in xp home will work the same way.
The first step is to set the security rules for the folder where the music is.
-right click on the folder - properties - security. Set one account to not be able to access the folder, while the other have full rights.
After you succesfully apply the rules, log in to windows with the account which cant access the folder, and run virtual dj "Run As" with the account which has full access to the folder where the music is.
This way, you will only be able to access the music files from virtual dj.
This was a quick explanation aimed for those who have some knowledge of managing files and permissions in xp. Later I could make a beginners guide if needed.

What about encrypting the files?
Mensajes Wed 02 Jan 08 @ 1:44 pm
Try this one - it´s free .Creates a virtual encrypted disk within a file and mounts it as a real disk

Every encryption takes CPU time, so be careful.

Vdj suggested that it is not a good idea - have you used this w vdj 5 and does it work? safely and reliably ?
Thank you

Also, without locking out USB and CD Writing ability, when you right click on files in VDJ, you have the ability to "Move Files..." or "Copy Files...", wouldn't this contravene the access rights ideas?

The USB lock (Safend) sounds interesting.
Wanted to share a simple FREE program to lock your CD burner / CD Drives.
You probably already have your computer ask for a password at startup, if you don't you should so this program can add some security.
This program prevents your CD drive(s) from opening. Locking the drive renders your eject button useless. Asks for your password to unlock.
This program does NOT keep your CD drives locked when you restart your comp, however your start-up password will prevent windows from starting if anyone attempts to reboot.

It is possible to change the shell in Windows XP. Do this at your own risk, but this is how you do it:
Changing the default shell (only current user):
1) open regedit (start menu > run, and type in regedit).
2) go to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon.
3) add a new string value (Edit > New > String Value) called shell. and set the value to the path of the new shell e.g C:\Litestep\litestep.exe.
4) log out and log back in.
Unfortunately, without a proper shutdown button for the computer built into the program, it might not be the neatest way to handle the problem. I'm not even sure what it'd do if you closed the program.

Yeah but all My Videos are stored on an External USB Drive so what's stopping anyone unplugging it from my laptop and plugging it into theirs ?

I think that you should be able to put some kind of password on the drive that only works with one computer...think I´ve read about it somewhere..but I can´t remember where :(
