Anybody ever use monster xlr cables to hook up speakers or rca for sound cards to use w tccd. If so are they any better than the standard stuff

XLR cables are 'balanced'. this means there is a grounded and signal wire along with an additional 'shield' which protects the sound. it gives the audio signal of being louder and of higher quality (especially over longer distances). only use it if you have balanced connections on both sides otherwise there isnt any benefit to it. it also means there is a way to zap yourself slightly as it's using a voltage controlled signal rather than normal impulses.

XLR is only the connector type, the round thingy with 3 prongs. however alot of mixer and soundcards have balanced connections which are 1/8" connectors. the difference is that for a balanced connection you need the 1/8" socket connector with the ring on it to match the 3-prong xlr.

Sorry, Im familiar with Monster as all my RCA are Monster. I didnt realize you were asking about them specifically. I dont have any Monster XLR. Due to the design of balanced cables, I dont think they will be any better than other stuff.

I have purchased a good amount of Monster cables over the years. I do think that they are worth the extra money. Their "DJ" series is a good one, and the cables are great quality. Overall, I have noticed over the years, that my monster cables do tend to last a good amount longer than my standard cables. So, I think it's worth the extra investment, even though it can get pricey.

They are nice cables but also a nice price and 99.9% of ur listeners would likely fail a blind listening test to tell any discernible difference in audio quality. They also die just as quickly when bent or stretched the wrong way as mid range cables. I dont believe they are worth the extra cash and just buy the cheaper cables now. There are other types that have a similar look and quality without having to pay for the 'Monster' branding - just my 2c - no offence to the Monster guys ;)

ive also seen some extremly scientific testing which refutes the claim that expensive, trickily built cables are better (speaker wire, specifically). they tested 1000USD/metre cable versus junk found in the garbage that was well oxidized. They analyzed an electrical signal and found there was a difference and variance of such a tiny degree that the price difference was totally ludicrous.
whether you believe it or not is irrelevant, however when you see counter arguments, it is hardly scientific. the premise that it 'just sounds better' is far from scientific. more to say that all human senses are specific to the person. considering how mind over matter is such an imporatnt psycological factor as well, points to the idea that anyone who would spend insane amounts of money on cables are definitley going to convince themselves that it's better otherwise they look like idiots.

Thanks for all your opinions. I am using monster rca for my hercules mk2 w/tcd but after reading your post i will stick to regular xlr cables for my powered speakers and save alot of money

For all my connection inside my case I use either Monster or the Radioshack generic equivalent cables. The only reason why I do this is for the lifetime warranty on all better quality cables. For my EQ/maximizer/audio enhancer to my powered speakers I use these made by Blue Microphone.
They also come with a lifetime warranty. Do I really need thick expensive cables? No....but it gives me peace of mind knowing I am using the best possible connection types for my professional set ups.
For connections between mixer/EQs/Maximizers and/or Audio Enhancers I deal with a company called Pro Cables and Sound http://procablesnsound.com/PCNS_Main.asp he does very nice work and makes everything to specifications I select. Color options are nice also for ease of connection and I love right angle connectors for inside of flight cases, keeps the mess to a minimum.
Now, the reason why powered speakers use XLR cables between the speaker and the sound source is this. There is considerably less sound signal loss through XRL cables than with standard RCA. RCA cables should be kept to a maximum of 6 feet in length, after 6 feet the signal loss can be a problem. XRL can be as long as 50 feet with only a minimal loss of sound signal.

Trust me, all this monster marketing is hype and in real life their outrageously expensive cables offer little if any improvement over any generic good quality cables costing 1/10th or less..

As an long time audio engineer; I have seen many different types of cables and can tell you that at a distances under 25 feet for speakers or 6 feet for RCAs, the monster cables are %99.99 hype. If at those distances you can tell the difference between a $10 Radio Shack cable from a $40 Monster cable, you are part dog. Only a dog or some animal with equal hearing could tell the difference. I agree that over a long distance (100 feet or more) a better/thicker quality cable will sound better, but only true HiFi people will know the difference. Most studios buy a Proco generic cable and cut their own. Shealded for RCA, un-shealded for speaker cables.
Remember to always keep speaker/RCA cables as far away as possible from power converters, adaptors and cables; because it can cause noise.

Monster cables are the biggest ripoff in the DJ industry, no way around that fact. They dont sound any better, and don't last any longer. Even if they do have a lifetime warrenty, what if a couple of your cables break, go like 4 weeks with no cables? Thats silly.
