Some may argue that Djing is an artform. If that argument is true, there isn't a wrong way to do it. End of story.

Hey guys,
Just because we have the beat match tool doesn't mean we have to use it.
Now if someone has enough time to walk into your gig and criticize you for not using vinyl,
think about this. You got the gig and they don't! This alone makes you a professional DJ of at least some caliber.
Whose really the looser you or them? Don't feel so bad, this is an age old argument that will never go away. Even when us oldskoolers are djing in the nursing homes from our hospital beds!
Cheers!

I'm getting close to the nursing home, but till I do, I'm still rocking. It is easy for me to tell an idiot to suck my mp3, because I have your fake DJ right here. Now take this pen and paper, and take some notes, because there will be a test at the end of the gig. I never let an idiot get under my skin, for the simple fact that there are so many of them.
Now where did I put that bedpan?

If you use Beatlock or sync The Pc is doing your mix , this is my point of view .
Can You imagine a F1 driver using a car with automatic changes ?
You can Rock the party using cds ,mp3 or turntables ,is Not the point , sorry .I'm Talking about "How" are you doing your job , SO , you have 2 ways to do it : 1) select the correct song and press Beatlock 2) select the correct song and do your job . For me Vdj haven't a good quality bpm detection , for the moment Vdj can't do a better mix than me .
BUt always is our choice , use the features or not , personally , if I go to a discotheque and the dj is using Turntables it takes same respect for me .In year 2008 is difficult to see a dj using technics turntables and doing a "bad" performance , because he can use vdj or other software if he don't kwow how to MIX -
The perfect dj booth is : 2 turntables & mixer , looks better - I respect all my friends here , it's only a point of view and you always can be dissapointed with it .
NOw , in year 2008 , is easy to be a dj :
a) dowload a playlist form a known dj .
b) put "dj" before your name , press Sync and voila : you are a dj !

You're starting to sound like a SSL jock Man
This software is DESIGNED to teach the craft that is sooo guarded and protected by pro djs who don't want competition, sorry to spoil their party...
The fact is that MOST new djs start as "wavies" and as they learn the ropes change and adapt to the real methods of mixing.
There is much to learn and understand before you can do it properly, and in the end it really doesn't matter what you use for tools if the result is the same.
If anything, the software has improved the djs who use it by trial and error.
Without the software and or forums and or apprenticeships few would ever get the chance to learn the craft (which is probably the real problem here as it creates competition).
I think software has taught many including myself the "how to" of mixing and if it weren't for that most would be still stuck slamming fading tracks or on auto play.
With regards to the doush that posted what he did towards Peter, that has to be one hell of an ego driven hurtful person, and personally represents MOST of the turntablists in the way they act and post on the forums I read.
They will stop at NOTHING to discredit others who don't match their ways and means of mixing.
It's the same group/type of dj that slammed cd players, just a different era.
They want to turn it into a war, well so be it...take no prisoners.

As an answer to the original post of this topic
I started mixing at around 1995 and since 1999 im playing into parties. Mixing or beatmatching is easy with vinyls or with cd's or with anything. IMO is easier to mix with vinyls than with cd's. But just a beatmatching is not what makes a good set. The tracks make the good set, after all those years i finally decided to go digital. Im in mixing heaven now, i can do so much more now. Loops, effects, turns, samples, heaven and i dont have to worry if my tracks lose sync. And i didnt had to pay 3000euro+ to have a setup in my place that could do the same. As for parties and gigs i play i still use cd's and vinyls but in just about everywhere they have cdj's1000 and pioneer mixers. Have u ever used a pioneer mixer with ur vinyls? if so yeah u r a very skillful dj....the mixer does the mix for u. Its the music that makes a dj, the original music, the creativity, the originality, the journey...hell i even seen dj's playing with an already made up set playing from ableton. nothing wrong with tthat as long as the music is good. The music is evolving the mixing styles are evolving, new ways to play our favorite music. Anything new u can count me in.

You guys are right about the Sync button, my self I would never use it especially when I’m using the time code. You won’t believe how many “DJ’s…hmm…the 2 cool letters in front of your name” came to me while I was playing to ask me: Can I spin the next song?
In some cases I say: Sure no problem, do you know how? Answer: Yeah… it’s so easy with this software.
Mean while he doesn’t know what I’m going to do, I’ll wait for him to choose the song, once is ready, I close the lid of the laptop, no visual and access to the Sync button, only the pure sound in the headphones and the pitch pots on the turntables. You should see they’re faces it’s so funny you guys should try this, some guys they actually start to sweat and shake, after 3 min of keep trying and trying to match the beat he feels so stupid and gives up, then I take over for the remaining 1.5m match the beats in 30 sec and mix the song. Some people have the balls to say “It’s something wrong with your system”.
I know people, sorry… DJ’s, witch they don’t even know how to measure a song and when to start/fade the mix, but they push the SYNC master button and brings the faders up and down because this is what they see on tv, now this is ridiculous.
First exercise for the people who they thing are DJ’s, mix your songs with the lid close.
Second exercise, try mix cd’s if you don’t have an opportunity for vinyl.
You know how it is “Once you learned how to ride your bike with no hands, you learned how to ride the bike overall.”

Sync considered an aid? Don't maker me laugh, everytime I press it I find the beats go right out, the "sync" button for me is like a self destruct button..
You don't push it unless you don't want tommorow to come.

I'm with you on that Bagpuss, sooner listen to the music and beats and to use what I have learnt over the pass 12 years than to hit beatlock or sync.

We are talking about three different things here.
1) Beatlock, which is the main beef of the wavie haters where the program mixes for you.
This is most certainly the death of the dj unless he is playing club/techno beats, more likely a train wreck waiting to happen if you hit that button. I don't know anybody how uses it because it's so broken.
2) Sync, which is nothing more than a "match" button which only quickly matches the bpm rather than doing it with the pitch sliders and has nothing at all to do with auto mixing.
3) Auto play with "smart" enabled, will try to beatmatch, but again nobody I know takes that chance in their right mind.

OK this begs the question Rick....how many people do you know who are DJs and actually in their right minds??

its true, of course to work for a software company making dj software is equally as crazy

The sync button, sometimes it works and not others while its on.....But I only use it to match the BPM on 2 tracks then take it off (if I need a quick mix), or the tunes are, say 132bpm and 68bpm (hate maths lol)...... Most UKG tunes have beats everywhere, so the sync button will not work.
Now, Drum & Bass can be a different storey...... It's all about the different types of genre of music.

DJing with computers is like a guitar automatically being played by two hands. One picks a chord and the other one strumming with you just waiting and adjusting from time to time. I can't remember having seen a dumbass doing that! So yeah, making music or mixing - as a derivate of making music - should be pure and requires authentic skills.
Mensajes Sun 21 Apr 13 @ 6:10 am
Talking about dumbass, you dug out a dead and buried five year old thread... that took great skill.
