Tópico: Spherical vs Elliptical

Este tópico es antiguo y puede contener información incorrecta para la nueva versión.

Hi there,

I've read the guide to TCV and needles:

http://www.virtualdj.com/forums/66867/General_Discussion/Cyder_s_TCV_Needle_Guide_and_Tcv_Specifications.html

which recommends Spherical because they cause less damage to the records, but this contradicts another article I've just read here whch says the complete opposite:

http://www.mio.co.za/article.php?cat=&id=103

So I'm quite confused as to what needles I should actually be getting! My primary concern is record wear as I don't do much scratching.

Hi DJFR,

The TCV that VirtualDJ use are designed by DJ Cyder, a teamer.

The best Carts for these TCV are the Ortofon Q-Berts. But I use

Stanton Discmaster V3 Cartridge, with my 1210's and I haven't had any problems with them and my TCV's.

These Carts are designed for High output and Bass and minimal Que burn. I don't scatch and never intend too, as I play House, so these Cart's are perfect for me, and I rate them higher.

Elliptical needles rub on the sides of the record grooves and sit much lower into the groove and have a larger contact patch, as a side effect they will wear your records out faster. The reason I wrote to use the spherical needles is because they sit much higher in the groove, and the are much cheaper then the elliptical counterparts and create way less drag/heat so its a cost and wear trade off also elliptical needles aren't good for scratching. Also another advantage to elliptical needles is they can produce a higher frequency response but in a control vinyl situation its not going to help at all, the elliptical needles have a higher contact area and create more drag which creates more heat which equals more wear. When we tested the gen-3 vinyls we used both types and found that the spherical were generally better in responce, and wear. The vinyl with the elliptical needle failed much before the spherical one in the lab tests here.

My wife always uses the Elliptical but I prefer the treadmill. I have not seen a spherical trainer yet but will give it a shot as soon as we get one in the Gym.

All in fun...

Thanks for that valuable insight Paulie... Well I guess im off to get some Ortofon Pro's then!

Cheers for the responses

Are the Ortofon Digitrack's any good?

of course, if you can't get the q-berts it would be the next best choice.
