Tópico: The DJ Business? Gear?

Este tópico es antiguo y puede contener información incorrecta para la nueva versión.

I'm a starter dj that just dj's at family parties and at home. I now want to start to dj for real, but i don't know how to get started. Can someone give me an example of how to know what customers want and what music to play, do they tell you what music they like what songs to play or is it all up to the dj to solve that out.

I've been to parties that dj's do mash up or mix music to make a new song, just play tracks from start to beginning and then put next song, and to parties where they play the whole song an just mix the ending with the start of the next song...........what is the best way to play music in a party? mash ups, track to track, or track mix track?

I have so many other questions, but these are my top questions. Can I get some tips?

One more question which do you prefer:

Two Denon s1200's w/ Denon120 mixer

OR Two Denon s3500 w/ my Hercules MK2

OR Denon hc4500 w/ Denon x500 mixer w/ Denon bu 4500

Any other setups that are good and not as expensive?

As far as music preperation goes, I usualy try & get a list of songs from the client then I do further research based on their list of songs. Either way billboard.com is a great place to do your research, it's a very big help;^]

The Customer always wants to hear whats new on the radio. If you are gonna start to dj pro. You need to work on building up a big library that way you can have what people request. What type of music do you want to dj. Do you want to be a hip hop dj, a techno dj, latin DJ or everything.

I saw that you have a little list of equipment to chose from... Are you a scratch dj or someone that just plays songs one after the other.. Just plain mixing...

things may be complicated in the beggining but its a process you go thru. First the equipment... Then the music, " You practice alot ".. Listen to other djs and tune in to the radio on fridays and saturdays at night to hear the mixes. Dont go booking parties in the beggining, you need to work on your skills first. People will always remember the dj that sucked..

I can recomend you on whats good to get and not.

Are you NY ?

my two penneth. first of all you always have a starting point when you are booked for a function be it 18th, 21st, wedding, anniversary or whatever, look at the room at the start of the evening way up the ages try to find a common ground, play to that and then get them to dance/party in a way you think will interest all guests at the party, thats the secret of been a half decent dj, now saying that it is a whole lot different playing a bar or club and sometimes a hell of a lot easier to get the punters moving, think of it this way if you were the punter what would you like to hear coming from the dj to make the audience as a whole enjoy themselves, thats your job... just do it

Thanks...........I like to do mashups, u know mix things up with all types of music like hip hop, juke, techno , latin, new and old, whatever is able to be danced.
BUT how do I know what is appropriate for the occasion or does it not matter as long as they dance?
And what gear would you suggest of my choices? Got any other gear setups that are good and not as expensive? if you have more business tips please post.

I'm from the chi, Chicago

If you like to scratch hip hop. I would recomend getting the Pioneer CDJ 800s over the denon 3500s.. many people buy the 3500s and end up selling them to get pioneers. If you dont like table top cd players, then get the Denon HC4500 and the Denon X 500 mixer Check out craigslist.com for good dj deals..

To know what is appropiate for the ocassion, you have to ask the customer what type of music they want to hear.. Also ask them if they have any request. Tell them to give you a list

If they want hip hop, they would want to hear also, reggae, r & b, oldschool hip hop etc

For latin people, they hear everything--- salsa, merengue, bachata, reaggeton, Reggae R & b hip hop house etc.

There is alot to explain from starting out as a dj but you take it a step at a time.

Just send me a PM with your email Scriber oner... Ill give more details..

If you're thinking about being a club DJ.....the best advice I can give you is to hang out at the club you want to spin out. Become a regular and make a not of what songs are played.

It's easier to read the venue than the crowd. If you're in a club mostly known for punk and alternative.....don't even think about playing hip hop. You've got to take into consideration the neighborhood you're in also.....and what's popular in that area.

I do a retro night and I've got to deal with a different crowd every single week. In my case, what gets people to the dance floor is Duran Duran so if they like Duran Duran....they probably like Pet Shop Boys or New Order or Dead or Alive......club music. If they're dancing to Violent Femmes....they'll probably like The Pixies or The Cure or Morrissey.....alternative rock.

The thing that works for me is trying to be as diverse as possible. If you see the crowd losing interest in your new hip hop track....give them something you KNOW they will like. If they still don't dance to it, you probably want to shift gears and do more mashups to bring you into a more electronic sound.

Top 40 is usually an easy crowd. They like whatever is popular on the radio so you might want to check out your local radio station's play list or The Billboard Hot 100. If the venue wants you to spin hip hop and you're playing hip hop and nobody is dancing.....that's probably because the club is dead or your promoter sucks which means get away from those guys and try out some other clubs until you find your fit.

so which setup is best??????
