I am a new comer to vj-ing and I am deciding which software to buy, virtual dj looks very good. my friend has it, but only does music on it.
I have:
Gateway laptop
windows vista home premium
intel dual cpu 1.73ghz
3 gb ram
mobile intel 965 express chipset family
what do i need in terms of hardware? do i need an external video card?
whats the best type of portable hardrive to get for this?
how do i load up videos into the program?

Buy once by making your external hard drive big with a minimum of 500GB. High speed USB is acceptable but a IEEE 13-94 fire wire connection is faster and deemed preferred in almost anything Video.
Not sure if connection speeds even effect vdj performance, but its good to know as a rule of thumb as you will probably start to experiment with video a lot more in years to follow.

The mobile intel 965 express chipset family is the intergrated graphic card;)

I think that if u do basic mixing of video it is ok with that as the intel GMA series is not bad.
But if u wanna do serious n intense video mix, u need to look at at laptop with a graphic card that have its own dedicated memory.

I have that graphics card and i can do any and everything video. I scratch and use multiple plug ins.. I think if the rest of the computer can work as a team to support that card. Then you may be in business. Just MHO though. How many people spend tons of time and money on GT cards and still can't get them to work. Hell, my other computer (pc) has 7200GS and by standards should not work well.. but I have had it for a year now.

Does virtual dj play all files-- I tried loading an avi and wmv video into it, and the file doesnt even appear in the vdj folder? what gives? I went into the video configurations and checked activate and all the boxes--still nothing?
