Hi all, when you make a mix cd, does it sound commercial to you? For example, if you go to a record store and buy a mixed house cd from DJ (Insert famous name), you will hear the same beat through out the cd. The cd will start off slow in intensity then peak at the middle then start slowly coming down in intensity till the cd finishes. Why I am asking this is I gave a mix cd to a co-worker last week and I saw him yesterday. He told me it sounded good, but it sounded like it wass comercial and there was no creativity to it. I asked him what he meant, he told me that there is no mixed genere's in the cd. He asked me if I can mix 80's, rap, hi-hop, reggae and top 40 in one cd. I told him that I never really tried.

I told him that creativity is subjective. What I find creative, someone may not. He did not buy that statement. I thought it was a good cd, also subjective, lol, but I told him that I will make a cd for him that he thinks is "creative" My delima is that I have this mind-set where I need to start slow, peak in the middle and end slow. Comercial. How do I get out of this behavior? Any tips?

I don't get by what he means commercial. If anything he wants you to make a commerical mix by putting different genres in it.
If you only only spin certain genres alot fo people will think that it sounds very similar & uniteresting but to people who liek that certain genre it mgiht sound very intersting.

just watch he is not using your talents to pirate the cd to others, try and put a name drop into to it, beginning middle and end.

Most people do not really care about keeping a mix in the same genre. They want songs they know and can sing to. I always try to stay in the same sub-genre when mixing..but always get requests for something totally un-related to that genre, what ever it is. So, try to put together a CD of top 40 songs..I bet your co-worker will say its the best ever....

Your mind set is the delivery! it's all in the delivery it's really important if you wanna be a great dj. To carry a night off thats how its done! music selection, good mixing and the delivery of course - up, peak and then down again. I love it when im peaking and have them in the zone.

do you have a website with some of your work.

That's a great point Tayla, never really thought of that.

Quite a few people here use www.musicv2.com its 25 USD for a lifetime membership. One caveat it is not a file dump..its also a community, sort of like this one.

So, anyone can listen or even download my mixes on this site? Also vice-versa?

yes they can listen to the stream without signing up..to down load they can register as a listener for free

It all depends on what kind of dj you want to be. There are those that strictly spin only one genre or sub-genre of music and there are those that spin a little of everything. Dj's of the top 40, hip-hop, reggae, mash-up variety are usually spinning to a more varied crowd who aren't into a certain type of music (unlike househeads or dnb heads). Bottom line in my opinion is spin the music you have a passion for and try to look for audiences that will feel what you're playing.

I'm with Digitalassassin... Make CD's of music you enjoy spinning and are good at spinning to promote yourself. If someone doesn't like a CD you make because of the silly reasons your co-worker mentioned, they just don't feel the music you love. When I find the time to make a CD, it's a creation of music that I'm into. I would never make a CD of music I'm not feeling, because... as we all know... it takes a lot of work to make a high quality disc. I'm not putting all that sweat into a disc for music I don't enjoy. If I'm not into the music, I probably won't put all that sweat equity into it. Which could result in a bad disc. Which I would just throw away and no one would hear it anyway. Not that I've ever done that, LOL! After thinking about it for a second, I've probably trashed more mix CD's then I've put out there.

As far as tips for changing up the flow of the disc, here are some things I do. Just keep in mind when I make discs, the music is mostly Urban. I know you're a House DJ, so I'm not sure how this will work for you since I've never done a House CD. It's worth a shot if any ideas interest you, though... In some of my discs, depending on the BPM's of the music I selected, I split the disc up into 2 or 3 mini sets with separate build ups, and peaks. To transition between the mini sets... if the BPM's are close, I'll just blend them and put some drops in it. If the BPM's don't match, it may just use a simple backspin, sound effects, or even an audio cut from the popular movie of the moment. On a higher difficulty level, I've made my own beats to blend the transitions. If the BPM's are a +/-10 BPM spread, I'll use the beat I made to blend with the outro, put acapella drops in along the way as I speed up the beat. Just some ideas, hope it helps.

If someone said my mix was commercial then that means $$$£££££ (notcie how thw £ is worth more than the $)

Commercial = Sales x 10,000's

Genre = Sales x 100's

The guys are correct above. He didn't dig it. Ask another friend next time

also skits work of you dont have professional drops to change tempo...i.e. drop the skit change tempo..if you can stratch a lil solo
works as good as a drop..

my 2 cents

Just do whatever you like - seriously

You will find your own audience. You can always refine and tweak your sound to appeal slightly more to a Mass audience. But without your own sound your own audience; There's nothing to tweak
