Old discussion around here.

It is not automated.

You know what, I'm not really into the "total control" & the controller way of djing. But I don't think I'm a jack ass like that. That dude, just needs a serious ass-whooping. Anyone who has the balls to say that to another dj should be stoned(rocks not weed) for disrespect.

um roc raida , mr dibbs qbert and atrak all use software that makes it easier. so does mix master mike and ztrip.... i mean these are people i have been right next to while performing ( not front row but on stage) so i go a pretty good look at them using software.... hmmmm go figure

@ DJ MARCEL

i know it aint automated..just askin peoples opinion..yea he did a deserve a beaten it but id rather sit back and mixx my music..he just hatin cuz he cant buy virtual dj and he dont know how to use it..

Well tell him, time have evolved,it's 2008..hehe;)

hehe..NEW DJ ERA RIGHT HERE IN VIRTUAL DJ..jejeje.

Well, a few years ago all "real" DJ's used vinyl and said they will never use a CD player. Look at them now... ;)

That argument is just a bunch of bull, imo. I wonder if it's the guys who don't want to learn something new or can't use a computer are the ones who say that.

If people weren't supposed to use things that make life easier, we'd still be lighting freakin' torches in our nightclubs instead of using electric lights, for gods sake. Why are human beings so resistant to progress? It almost sounds like the religion that put people to death who commit the heresy of believing that the sun doesn't revolve around the Earth. It's almost like some DJs are part of a cult has its own set of dogmatic beliefs based on ancient traditions.

Just because you don't have to spend the entire duration of a song tweaking your pitch slider and keeping two records in sync doesn't mean that you aren't "working" as a DJ. Using software to help speed up that process and to give you new abilities can allow you to focus less on specific technical aspects of mixing and introduce more, new creative elements into mixing and DJing, and focus on entertaining more and mixing less. That's my philosophy, and it has worked really well for me.

It's even more humorous that some guys believe that computers and "digital sound" should have no part in DJing. How the hell do they think that electronic dance music, and pretty much all modern pop music is made?

I agree i with u man..im still workin if im using virtual dj..i still got to cue some songs make sure everybody dancing..still have to have certain things to worry about..

A man/woman who chooses to use old tools and methods will be left behind. A man/woman who is open minded to "new tools" and methods will grow, learn and become better than the other man.

my 2 cents...

I've gotta say though, when you see those oldschool scratch DJs doing body tricks and going nuts - like q-bert and Roc Raida and stuff like that, it's damned fun to watch.

As fun as it may be at times, I'd think that it's not really going to keep most people entertained for long hours, and it probably doesn't pay the bills to play like that constantly. I'd probably have been fired at any gig I've ever played at if I did that all the time. I guess maybe people who are used to watching those guys feel like there is something missing when real vinyl records aren't involved... but that's a pretty small niche.

I think that using modern tools, however, a DJ could incorporate really neat performance elements into their sets, but it's so new so you haven't seen many DJs that have been able to build a reputation on that kind of thing. DJ 2nd Nature has some neat things that he does - interesting to watch, and he has some really cool sets that incorporate video and the whole bit. He generally uses DVJ 1000s, or the like, but if you look closely at what he's doing, you can tell that there is a *lot* of prep work going into his sets. Like the fact that he's only using two DVDs for a 20 minute set. So is he cheating because he does work in advance to make the execution easier?

heh... I think his results speak for themselves, so who gives a flying f**k? I guess at the end of the day though, everyone has their own style, and their own little "tricks" that they use to enhance their performance and make things easier for them. So if your style is that you won't touch anything other than raw vinyl, then cool. But it's not gonna get any easier to bring your crates of vinyl to every gig and try to compete with all the guys bringing their laptops with 100 times the amount of music that can do the same stuff many times faster (like finding a song and load it onto a deck).

It's just a totally different game, really. Doubtful that anybody would hire Roc Raida to DJ their wedding :)

These are just a bunch of people that refuses to progress. I wonder what they teach to their children what to do?Maybe not to use a computer?hmmmm...
At any rate, they can still feel the old school way of djing does w/ the use of Time Coded Vinyls and at the same time embracing the new bread of technology.

Wanna bet? It's done all the time in my market.

Before I started using VDJ I admit I felt the same way your neighbor did. I have been DJ'ing since before any computer program was ever used to dj and I admit, that at one time, I thought computer dj's took away from the art. However, now that I have begun to mix videos vdj was an obvious choice, and I have found that there are lazy digital dj's and there are lazy analog dj's just like there are the greats playing on each platform too. Whether you're spinning vinyl, cd's, or on vdj it just has to sound good and be entertaining. I have seen guys and would like to consider myself one who despite vdj making it easier, puts real effort into making tight mixes, creative sounds and effects, and smart song selection into my shows. So let the old school dj laugh. While he carries ten crates of records, I'll zip by him with my sont vaio into the 21st century.

f**k em & feed em beans...

im just hoping u aint talkin about mexicans..kuz us mexicans LOVE BEANS..

Frijoles are freakin' awesome!

Number 1, I don't even know what Automix is.
Number 2, What are the sync buttons for?

Whoever says using a computer to DJ isn't workin' or isn't really DJ'ing is on crack. I was sweating all over my Total Control last Saturday! I'm lucky it didn't short circuit.

What computer DJ'ing does is make searching for tracks easier. That's it. I still beatmatch, I still mix. In fact it's more fun because I don't have to turn around to search for records or CDs anymore. My fingers don't get dirty and I don't get papercuts from the jackets. My records and CDs don't get scratched, damaged by the sun or stolen. Setup is way faster.

I did a gig with a friend of mine. He refuses to DJ with a laptop. He asked me to bring CD players to one of our gigs. So, I brought my mobile mixer and CD player system. Hooked up my laptop, DJ|IO and Total Control. He was going crazy looking for CD's. I was like "dude, the track's almost over...when are you going to throw in the new one?". I must of said that at least 3 or 4 times.

And another thing: Roc Raida and Q-Bert are not DJs. At least not when they are doing their 20 minute sets, they're not.

They are turntablists. A turntablists has mad skills but a turntablist can't play 8 hours straight (I have) without playing the same song twice and not bore the crap out of the crowd. I go to a club or a party to dance not watch some jackass ruin vinyl. I'm not knockin' the skills, but turntablism doesn't move a party...

A friend of mine bought some turntables a couple of years ago from a "Turntablist". My friend checked out the turntables and they were fine. The "Turntablist" says "hey, I'll sell you all of my records for a $100". Needless to say, my friend and I were both intrigued. We both have sizable collections of wax. So, My friend says "let me check 'em out". Dude had 2 crates! No bullshit. That's it. 2 freakin crates! And it was all scratchin' loops and samples...

I laughed my ass off.

If a real DJ uses a computer, who gives a shit? Now that I use a computer to DJ maybe I can do 16 hour set!
