If you're using a desktop machine, you're definately better off with a PCI soundcard IMHO.

I have run both.
When it comes to regiditty, the usb cards have the advantage.
What I mean is with a PCI card, the audio connections only flexability is in the speaker cord in the case of the maya and wave terminal I used.
So when a cord gets tugged or worse yanked by accident it goes straight to that fragile board.
Club installs would prefer a pci as its a permanent installation.
The Delta is the exception with loose patch cords.

USB cards with replacable cords are my preferrence for mobile work.
As for reliability or performance in general, imo they match.
Its the quality of the drivers that matter more in that regard.

now a days USB have the advantage as they are quite ruggied and can take a bash or 2, all depends on what your doing (club, or mobile DJ) and what suits you, the maya has quite a long USB lead so it can reach long places but PCI cards you have to buy longer leads which can be expensive.

I prefer pci cards as opposed to USB for two reasons: (1) sound quality and (2) USB cards place an unnecessary drain on the CPU.

You are right. So let's not forget Firewire and External PCIe cards.
