Hey VDJ Users,
I hate having to write forums more than once to get all the information I need so I will try to give as much information as possible to help you guys if you choose to answer my question.
CD Player:
-Numark NDX400
Mixer:
-Numark M3
Software:
-VDJ Home FREE (I am willing to get what it takes for this to work)
Okay, I have download the Timecode CD for the Pro grade Sound Level.
I am trying to get my Numark NDX400 to act as a controller for a type of software like VDJ, Traktor, CUE, etc.
Someone told me to download the Timecode CD and get a soundcard like the Maya 44 and connect somehow.
Those directions are pretty good, but please talk to me like in those "DJ: for Dummies" books.
I am really new to DJ'ing and need everyones help.
Please give me links to buy what I will need and how to set it up.
Anything that can help me.
Thanks VDJ!

Yeah, repeating the same question over and over again isn't going to win you a lot of points.
First and foremost, with the free version, time code has a 10 minute time limit then it will stop working. You will need to upgrade to PRO if you expect this to be gig ready.
1. Get a sound card with stereo in and stereo out. If you don't know what that means, then the rest of this is gonna be a huge uphill struggle.
2. Plug sound card into computer via USB or Firewire (they come in both flavors)
3. Install drivers for sound card
4. Reboot computer.
5. Open Virtual DJ.
6. Open the settings window in Virtual DJ (button that says config)
7. click the tab that says Sound Setup
8. Click the button that says "More..."
9. The first box says input. chose single timecode
10. the next box is output. chose single output
11. the next box is where you chose your sound card. it should show up on the dropdown box.
Any other configurations I believe are going to be limited to pro edition users.
Hope that helps.
btw...I would suggest not starting another thread with this same topic. You are more likely to get help if you keep everything under one thread. The forums are messy enough without reposting the same question across multiple threads... cool?

Thanks djnutz!
You were a big help!
Is a Maya 44 a reasonable sound card?
I am not professional, you could call me a 'Bedroom DJ', messing around and occasionally visiting small parties.
Also, I will not post multiple threads from now on :D

I have never used one personally so I can't speak from experience, but I have read a lot on the forums here about guys who have. Your best bet is to do a google search for maya44 and include Virtual DJ in the search.

The maya44 is a great soundcard for the money. I have had the same one for 3 1/2 years!! Used it solid for a year then upgrade to a NI AUDIO 8, now it's just my backup.
Hope that helps

Does the Maya 44 have 4 mono outputs or 4 stereo outputs? Ive been looking for a good soundcard to control 4 decks with an external mixer that doesn't cost $400 like the Traktor audio 10...

Thanks everyone!
So I was wondering would it be better to get a sound card and hook up my Numark NDX400 to VDJ, or just buy a MIDI controller for VDJ?

Use a sound card and the NDX400. If the computer goes down, the NDX400 can easily play from a thumb drive or regular audio CD. You just need a few cables and the right mixer.
First off, get a 2 channel mixer that has a line/phono switch on top for each channel. Now look on the back of the mixer where all the jacks are and make sure there is another switch allowing you to change the phono input level to a line level input. The signal from a CDJ is simply too hot for a phono input. You need to be able to change that.
Next, you need 2 "Y" cables. They need to be male to two female. These will plug into the back of the CDJ, effectively giving you two stereo sends. I used a red zip tie on the two female ends from the red jack on the CDJ so I know which is which. Then you take an RCA to RCA cable and plug one red plug into one of your red ziptied female ends and the white plug into one with no ziptie. Repeat with another RCA to RCA cable. Now one of these cables will go to the soundcard as previously discussed. Using a 3rd RCA to RCA cable, plug the output of the sound card to the LINE IN on channel one of your mixer. Take the other RCA cable that comes from the CDJ and plug that into the PHONO IN on that same mixer channel.
What you have now is your CDJ hooked up to both the computer and mixer. You flip the switch on top of the mixer that switches the input from line to phono and if you are playing a timecode, the music with go off and you will hear the tone of the timecode itself. Now have a USB thumbdrive already in the NDX400 and if you have a computer issue, hit the button on the CDJ to switch to USB and flip the switch on the mixer and you'll then be playing audio from the thumb drive.
Get a second CDJ and do the same thing for the other channel.
Oh yeah, and upgrade to Pro so the timecode doesn't stop after 10 minutes. You'll be happy you did. I bet you $5.
On a side note, I have tried using the time code from the thumb drive and it works. The wiring is still the same, just the process is a little different for switching over in case of a problem.

Wow! djnutz, you are awesome!
Your posts are so detailed which is what I like, I can't stand when someone gives me a generic answer. You have been a HUGE help.
Good news, I think, my mixer does have a PHONO/LINE switch. Well at least I think it does... I put some URL's to photos and case you wanted to see, one is a top view and one is the back of the mixer.

HAHA! I have the same mixer. Switch that switch from Phono to Aux Line on the back. The switch above the channel fader is the one that will switch your signal from direct from CDJ to PC.
My setup is on page 45 of this thread.

That thread is is probably not available to an NLU (Non-Licensed User) Once you go pro, you will be able to see a lot more around here. In the meantime, I will make it easy for ya:

Wow, that looks awesome!
Are those yours?
Cause if they are, we have the same setup, basically!
Thanks Man!
Also, can I ask how you add images, because I have been doing links.

Oh, Wow, I really need to get to this, start setting everything up and get some PRO level.
Right now, im working on building my music library.
I used to have a bunch of songs, but when Limewire shut down, all my songs were erased automatically, so now I buy my songs from AmazonMP3, because when I do it from iTunes it gives me a MP4 file and I need MP3 so it will work with my NDX 400.
But Amazon is cool too! :D

It is worth every single penny. It does audio, video, timecode, karaoke, etc for one price. Free support, free plugins, free skins, free updates for life, etc. No monthly fees, just one single investment $300.
Mensajes Tue 08 Mar 11 @ 10:26 am
Wait, so I pay $300 and that's it, no annual subscription or anything?

I plan to do this, but not now, because one, I need to get money for a soundcard, another Numark NDX400, and PRO version.
So im going to wait until I have enough for all or most of it.
And yes, I only have 1 Numark NDX400 as of now, but plan to get another in the near future.
Thanks djnutz again!
